BAUCHER AND HANSEN NAMED BOUYER LEADERSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS
Two Bulldog Student-Athletes Share FSU Athletics' Most Prestigious Honor
Danielle Baucher (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) of the women's volleyball team and women's golf team member Raquel Hansen (West Olive/Grand Haven) have been selected as the Ferris State University Athletics Department's 2006-07 recipients of the annual Willie Bouyer Leadership Award.
The award, which is regarded as the most prestigious of the FSU Athletics Department's four major annual honors, is named in memory of Ferris State’s first All-America football student-athlete Willie Bouyer, who was tragically killed in his hometown of Detroit in 1977. Candidates for the award are judged on their strong inspirational leadership and dedication to fellow Ferris State student-athletes. The nominees also should be involved outside of athletics in other college and community activities along with participating on a varsity athletics team for at least two years.
The Willie Bouyer Leadership Award was reinstated in 2002-03 following a seven-year absence.
Baucher, a senior outside hitter on the 2006 squad, received both American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region First-Team accolades this season as the team captain ranked among the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) overall leaders in kills, points and service aces for the 2006 campaign. She attained first-team all-conference recognition for the second straight season and was twice tabbed as the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week this campaign. The 2006 team Most Valuable Player tallied 10 kills or more in 27 of her 30 outings this season and reached double-figures in digs 23 times.
The 5-10 Baucher finished her Bulldog career with a school-record 1,559 career digs along with 1,492 kills, which presently ranks sixth on the school’s career kills leaders list. The 2006-07 GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree became the 14th player in the program's history to notch 1,000 career kills and only the sixth Bulldog player ever to record both 1,000 career kills and digs in Ferris’ season-opening home win over St. Joseph’s (Aug. 24). Baucher paced Ferris State in overall kills (4.45 kpg.) while ranking second in digs (3.41 dpg.). She played a significant role in leading the Bulldogs to a 21-9 overall record and the program's 14th all-time appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
Baucher, who was a 2005 Daktronics Second Team and AVCA Honorable Mention All-Great Lakes Region selection, was a FSU Student-Alumni Golf Club member and was also involved in organizations within her hospitality management degree program.
Hansen, a 2006-07 All-GLIAC Second-Team pick, compiled a 79.27 stroke average (2,061 total strokes) in 26 rounds for the 2006-07 season. Her season stroke average represents the 11th-best all-time among the program's single-season leaders. Hansen recorded eight finishes in the top 20, which included five top-10 efforts. Her highest finish was a fourth-place tying two-round 156 stroke total at the Ashland Invitational (March 30-April 1). She also carded a 156 score at the Northwood Invitational (Sept. 29-30) to gain a share of fifth place on the final leaderboard.
Hansen helped the Bulldogs win the 2007 GLIAC Championships (April 20-21) by firing a ninth-place tying 241 three-round score. The sophomore also was a part of this season's team which claimed the 2007 NCAA-II East Regional (April 30-May 2) title and placed third nationally at the 2007 NCAA-II Women's Golf Championships (May 9-12).
A 2006-07 GLIAC All-Academic Team member, Hansen currently ranks eighth on Ferris' all-time stroke average leaders list with an 80.39 average (3,698 total strokes) in 46 rounds. In her two-year career, Hansen has placed 13 times among the top 20 with seven being in the top 10.
A member of FSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Hansen served as the committee's communications director and was a co-GLIAC representative for the 2006-07 athletics season. She's also holds membership in the school's Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter.
