The Game: The Ferris State University football team opens the 1999 campaign and its 91st season of varsity competition this Thursday (Sept. 2) as the Bulldogs battle the nationally-ranked North Dakota State University Bison in non-conference action at Fargo, N.D.

Kickoff/Stadium: 8:05 p.m. (EDT)/Fargodome (18,700).

The Records: The contest represents the season opener for both schools. Last season, Ferris posted a 5-6 overall record and placed tied for sixth place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings with a 5-5 mark. The Bulldogs were 3-7 both overall and in the conference in 1997. Prior to two seasons ago, FSU had won an unprecedented five consecutive GLIAC titles (1992-96).

North Dakota State compiled a 7-4 overall record last season, including a fourth-place 6-3 mark in the North Central Conference. The Bison have won five NCAA-II Playoff titles and have claimed eight national crowns since 1965.

The Coaches: Ferris State - Jeff Pierce (Ferris State, 1979), Fifth season, 30-16-0 (.652) – (0-0-0 vs. North Dakota State); North Dakota State - Bob Babich (Tulsa, 1984), Third season, 16-7-0 (.696) - (0-0-0 vs. Ferris State).

Pierce, the 1995 GLIAC Coach-of-the-Year, served 12 years as a Bulldog assistant prior to being named head coach in ‘95. He was FSU's’ defensive coordinator for seven years.

The Series: The contest represents the first-ever meeting between the two teams and is FSU’s second versus a NCC opponent. The Bulldogs lost a 10-7 decision at Nebraska-Omaha in 1974 (10/12).

Radio Coverage: This Thursday’s contest at North Dakota State can be heard live on WBRN-AM (1460)-Big Rapids. John Smith will call the play-by-play with Jason Edwards handling the color commentary duties. The pregame show begins at 7:40 p.m. (EDT) with an 8:05 p.m. (EDT) kickoff scheduled.

Ferris State Football - 1999: Whatever It Takes! is this season’s theme as the Bulldogs seek to getting back on the winning path this fall. FSU appears poised to contend for the conference crown as the Bulldogs welcome back nine starters on offense, five on defense, and their starting placekicker/punter. Senior quarterback Matt McCarthy (Alma), a 1998 honorable mention All-GLIAC performer, is back for his third full year as the starter after throwing for a school-record 3,143 yards with 18 TD’s last season. His two favorite targets, senior flanker Neal Mozdzierz (Royal Oak/Kimball) and sophomore split end Clarence Coleman (Miami, Fla./Miramar), also return to the fold. Last season, the pair combined for 1,871 yards and 11 TD’s on 140 receptions. Mozdzierz paced the league in receiving with a school-record 80 catches for 877 yards and six TD’s while Coleman caught 60 passes for 994 yards and five TD’s. Mozdzierz received All-GLIAC Second-Team honors last season while Coleman was an honorable mention all-league pick.

Senior tailback Mo Harris (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough) led the GLIAC in rushing with a career-high 1,424 yards and 13 TD’s en route to attaining all-league first-team and Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette Honorable Mention All-America kudos. Senior tackles Dennis Strey (Gobles) and Jonathon Griffin (Tampa, Fla./Thomas Jefferson) are the top returning linemen after garnering second team and honorable mention all-conference recognition last year.

Senior defensive end Jeff Puffer (Manton) spearheads the Bulldog defense. Puffer, a two-year starter, notched a career-best 68 tackles last season to place seventh on the squad. He led Ferris in tackles for loss with 14.5 for 57 yards, including 9.5 quarterback sacks for 46 yards. Joining Puffer up front are junior tackle Ryan Morris (South Lyon) and junior end Dave Zuiderveen (Kalamazoo/Christian). Morris made 58 tackles last fall to place ninth on the squad while Zuiderveen was 15th with 25 stops. Sophomore outside linebacker Adam Riley (Corunna) and junior strong safety Ryan Hodges (Montrose) are other notable defenders. Riley tallied 43 tackles a season ago to place 12th among the team’s leaders while Hodges placed fourth with 76 stops. Senior Doc Proctor (Big Rapids), a ‘98 first-team All-GLIAC kicker and second-team all-league punter, is back for his fourth year as the regular placekicker and punter. Proctor connected on a school-record 19 field goals and ranked second nationally in field goals per game (1.73 avg.).

FSU in the Preseason: Ferris is nationally ranked in one preseason poll - 25th by Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. Senior placekicker-punter Doc Proctor has been selected a NCAA-II Preseason Second-Team All-American by Hansen’s Football Gazette. Proctor garnered Hansen’s Football Gazette All-America Honorable Mention and Daktronics NE Region All-America First-Team accolades in ‘98. Hansen’s Football Gazette selected Mo Harris to its second team while Dennis Strey, Clarence Coleman, Neal Mozdzierz, Matt McCarthy, and Jeff Puffer garnered honorable mention honors.

North Dakota State Football - 1999: The Bison are ranked nationally in several preseason NCAA Division II national polls - 16th by the NCAA, 18th by Street & Smith College Football, and 19th by Don Hansen’s National Weekly Football Gazette. Junior Ryan Johnson (11-29, 116 yds, 1 TD) assumes the starting quarterback duties this fall following the graduation of record-setting QB Kevin Feeney. NDSU returns its top rusher in sophomore tailback Lamar Gordon (139-698, 8 TD’s) and its top receiver in senior split end Tim Strehlow (37-600, 6 TD’s). Senior strong safety Aaron Skyberg (67 tackles) and junior free safety Luke Shafer (61) are the top returning NDSU tackles leaders. The Bison return 42 letterwinners from Ô98, including 19 starters.

Bulldog Bites: The contest against North Dakota State represents the 89th season opener for Ferris State since 1900 . . . The Bulldogs have recorded a 37-46-5 record (.449) in season-opening contests, but have won seven of their last 10 openers . . . Since 1961, FSU has compiled an 18-16-2 mark (.528) in home-opening contests . . . Ferris State returns 32 letterwinners from last season with 14 on offense, 16 on defense, and two on specialty teams . . . The Bulldogs set or tied 40 various school team and individual records last fall.

Bulldogs On The Road: Ferris State is currently 34-16-1 (.676) in road contests this decade and the Bulldogs are 34-14-0 (.708) in regular-season away outings. Since 1993, FSU is 24-9-1 (.721) in overall road encounters and 24-7-1 (.766) in regular-season away games only. Ferris compiled a 2-4 road ledger last year.
