Bulldogs Gain More Depth With Arrival Of West Virginia State Transfer

Kevin WardFerris State University head football coach Jeff Pierce has announced quarterback Kevin Ward (Commerce /Lakeland) will attend and play football at Ferris State, beginning with the 2006 season.

The 6-4, 215-pound Ward played as a true freshman in the 2005 campaign at NCAA Division II West Virginia State University in Institute, W.Va., and will have three years of eligibility remaining at Ferris.

He threw for a team-high 1,284 yards and six touchdowns in 11 2005 contests while completing 52.6% (120-228) of his passes as the Yellow Jackets finished 2-9-0 overall and 2-6-0 in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) under former head coach Carl Lee. The WVIAC All-Academic Team honoree averaged 116.7 passing yards per contest and registered 97.22 efficiency rating points while rushing for five touchdowns on 59 carries.

Ward compiled seven 100-yard plus game performances this past fall, including six straight to conclude the campaign. He threw for a season-high 173 yards (11-20) versus West Virginia Tech (10/15) and also turned in a 172-yard passing effort (19-32) against Glenville State (10/29).

"We're excited to have Kevin join our football program," said Pierce. "He's a strong competitor and his mobility should fit well into our system. Kevin is also an excellent student who's committed to doing whatever it takes to be successful at Ferris State."

Ward was a two-time (2003-04) All-Kensington Valley Conference selection at quarterback and team offensive Most Valuable Player at Lakeland High School in White Lake, Mich., under head coach John Maltese. The 2005 graduate passed for over 1,100 yards in each of his last two seasons while throwing for a combined 19 touchdowns during that span. As a junior, the two-year (2003-04) team captain threw for a school-record 404 yards against Novi which represented the 15th-best yards per game performance in Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) history.

Ward also participated four years in basketball for the Eagles while holding membership in the National Honor Society and was involved the school's Leadership Program.

The son of Gary and Ann Ward, Landon plans to major in nursing at Ferris State.
