Brewster was among 114 players and 10 wide receivers to receive the publication’s preseason honor. This season marks the 18th year in which Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, a recognized authority on small college football, has selected NCAA Division II All-America and preseason All-America teams.
A season ago, Ferris had two representatives on the Football Gazette’s Preseason All-America Team in outside linebacker Kevin Myers and defensive tackle Whitney Bell.
The preseason recognition represents the second for Brewster this summer as the Ferris State receiver was selected to Lindy’s 2005 All-Division II Preseason All-America First Team.
A 2004 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team pick, Brewster earned honorable mention All-America plaudits by both the Football Gazette and D2Football.com a season ago. The 5-11, 214-pound wideout also received All-Northwest Region First-Team recognition from Daktronics, Inc., and the Football Gazette in 2004 while garnering second-team accolades by D2Football.com. The Bulldogs’ top receiver the last two seasons, Brewster was recognized as team’s Most Valuable Offensive Skill Player this past fall.
Brewster was on the receiving end of a career single-season best 81 passes for 1,230 yards and eight touchdowns in 11 outings a season ago. His season receiving yards output represented the third-highest total ever on Ferris’ all-time single-season receiving leaders chart. Among the final 2004 NCAA-II statistical leaders, Brewster ranked sixth in receptions (7.4 rpg.), eighth in receiving yards (111.8 ypg.), and 23rd in all-purpose yards (150.0 ypg.).
Brewster, an All-GLIAC second-teamer both at receiver and as a return specialist in 2003, presently is fifth among the school’s all-time receiving leaders with 2,263 career yards on 174 receptions and 18 touchdowns in 32 games. Brewster’s 3,844 career all-purpose yards is sixth best on the Bulldog charts while his 567 punt return yards (7.8 ypr.) on 73 career returns is fourth highest in school annals. The 2002 FSU Special Teams Player of the Year has amassed 999 career yards on 57 kickoff returns (17.5 ypr.), which is fifth best on Ferris’ all-time list.
Ferris State kickoff its 2005 campaign and its 98th year of varsity competition Saturday, Aug. 27, against the Grand Valley State University Lakers in Allendale, Mich. A 7 p.m. (EDT) starting time is slated for the GLIAC opener at GVSU’s Arend D. Lubbers Stadium. The Bulldogs then will gear up for their home opener Saturday, Sept. 3, when the Ashland University Eagles visit Top Taggart Field in a 7:05 p.m. (EDT) conference matchup. The gridiron contest is part of the “Turn Back The Clock Night” event which also features a music concert by Beatlemania Live! and the traditional post-game fireworks display. The Ferris football team will also be donning on throwback uniforms for the game.
