Carlton Brewster (Grand Rapids/Creston), a senior flanker on the Ferris State University football team has been selected to the 2005 www.CollegeSportsReport.com Division II Preseason All-America Team.
Brewster, who also has been tabbed as a 2005 preseason All-American by Lindy’s and Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, was among 11 players to receive third-team offense honors. A total of 99 individuals representing 68 colleges comprises the www.CollegeSportsReport.com Division II Preseason All-America Team for the 2005 campaign. The preseason team is made up of a first, second, third, and fourth team apiece on offense, defense and special teams.

Last season, Brewster garnered All-America Special Mention accolades by the online publication as did Bulldog outside linebacker Kevin Myers.
A 2004 All-America Honorable Mention pick by both the Football Gazette and D2Football.com, Brewster attained All-Northwest Region First-Team recognition from Daktronics, Inc., and the Football Gazette while picking up second-team kudos by D2Football.com. The team’s leading receiver each of the last two seasons, Brewster was chosen as the Bulldogs’ Most Valuable Offensive Skill Player this past fall.
The 5-11, 214-pound wideout was on the receiving end of a career single-season best 81 passes for 1,230 yards and eight touchdowns in 11 outings a season ago en route to earning All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) First-Team plaudits. His season receiving yards output represented the third-highest total ever on Ferris’ all-time single-season receiving leaders chart. Among the final 2004 NCAA-II statistical leaders, Brewster ranked sixth in receptions (7.4 rpg.), eighth in receiving yards (111.8 ypg.), and 23rd in all-purpose yards (150.0 ypg.).
Brewster, an All-GLIAC second-teamer both at receiver and as a return specialist in 2003, presently ranks fifth among the school’s all-time receiving leaders with 2,263 career yards on 174 receptions and 18 touchdowns in 32 games. His 3,844 career all-purpose yards is sixth best on Ferris’ all-time charts while his 567 punt return yards (7.8 ypr.) on 73 career returns is fourth highest in school annals. The 2002 FSU Special Teams Player of the Year has amassed 999 career yards on 57 kickoff returns (17.5 ypr.), which is fifth best among the Bulldogs’ career leaders.
Ferris State, which posted a 6-5 overall mark with a fifth-place 6-4 conference ledger last fall, will begin the 2005 season and its 98th year of varsity competition this Saturday, Aug. 27, versus the Grand Valley State University Lakers in Allendale, Mich. A 7 p.m. (EDT) start time is slated for the GLIAC opener at GVSU’s Arend D. Lubbers Stadium.
The Bulldogs then will gear up for their home opener Saturday, Sept. 3, as the Ashland University Eagles visit Top Taggart Field in a 7:05 p.m. (EDT) league encounter. The gridiron contest is part of the “Turn Back The Clock Night” event which also features a music concert by Beatlemania Live! and the traditional post-game fireworks display. The Ferris football team will also be donning on throwback uniforms for the game.
