Ferris State University senior flanker Carlton Brewster (Grand Rapids/Creston) has been named to the D2Football.com’s Preseason All-America Team as announced today (Aug. 22) by the online service.
D2Football.com, the only national media source devoted entirely to promoting and covering Division II football, features both a preseason and postseason All-America team on annual basis. Members of the 2005 D2Football.com Preseason All-America Team were chosen by the D2Football.com staff.
Brewster was one of three wide receivers to claim first-team honors on offense as 12 individuals comprised the entire offensive first team. A total of 54 individuals made up both the first and second teams on offense, defense, and special teams. Previously, the 5-11, 214-pound wideout has been selected a preseason All-American by Lindy’s magazine, Don Hansen’s Football Gazette, and www.CollegeSportsReport.com.
Joining Brewster on one of the teams from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC)-member schools were senior kicker Scott Greene (first team) and senior offensive lineman Josh Bourke (second team) both of Grand Valley State along with Michigan Tech senior offensive lineman David Kopke (second team). Senior defensive back Devin Conwell of Ashland and Saginaw Valley State senior linebacker John DiGiorgio both landed on the defensive second team.
Brewster is received the preseason recognition after turning in his best season in a Ferris uniform last fall with a career-best 81 receptions for 1,230 yards and eight touchdowns as an 11-game starter. His season receiving yards total marked the third-highest total ever on Ferris’ all-time single-season receiving leaders chart. Brewster also finished high among the 2004 NCAA-II statistical leaders by ranking sixth in receptions (7.4 rpg.), eighth in receiving yards (111.8 ypg.), and 23rd in all-purpose yards (150.0 ypg.). As a result of his notable performance, Brewster was recognized as a honorable mention All-America selection by the Football Gazette and D2Football.com while also garnering All-America Special Mention kudos from www.CollegeSportsReport.com.
The Bulldogs’ top receiver each of the last two seasons, Brewster earned All-GLIAC First-Team plaudits a season ago and was picked as Ferris’ Most Valuable Offensive Skill Player. He also was bestowed with All-Northwest Region First-Team accolades by Daktronics, Inc., and the Football Gazette while receiving second-team laurels from D2Football.com.
An All-GLIAC Second-Team honoree both at receiver and as a return specialist in 2003, Brewster currently is fifth among Ferris’ all-time receiving leaders with 2,263 career yards on 174 receptions and 18 touchdowns in 32 games. His 3,844 career all-purpose yards is sixth best on the school’s all-time charts while his 567 punt return yards (7.8 ypr.) on 73 career returns is fourth highest on the school’s list. The 2002 FSU Special Teams Player of the Year has amassed 999 career yards on 57 kickoff returns (17.5 ypr.), which is fifth best among the Bulldogs’ career leaders.
Ferris embarks on its 2005 season this Saturday, Aug. 27, versus Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich. Opening kickoff for the GLIAC opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. (EDT) at GVSU’s Arend D. Lubbers Stadium.
