A pair of Ferris State University football team seniors, flanker Carlton Brewster (Grand Rapids/Creston) and guard Jeff Williams (West Branch/Ogemaw Heights), have been selected to the 2005 Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-Northwest Region Team as chosen by the small college football publication.

The 2005 season represents the fourth year in which the Football Gazette has selected NCAA Division II All-Region Teams. The national publication has chosen NCAA-II All-America teams since 1988. The first-team and second-team All-Region selections will advance to a national ballot from which the 2005 NCAA-II Football Gazette All-America team will be selected in early January 2006.

Brewster and Williams both received third-team honors and were among 82 student-athletes to attain either first, second or third-team recognition for offense and defense. Players from 23 of the 37 football-playing schools in the Northwest Region earned All-Northwest Region plaudits.

The postseason honor is among several for Brewster, who has already garnered Associated Press (AP) Little All-America Second-Team and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-America laurels for his performance in the 2005 season. The two-time (2004-05) All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) pick will be taking part as a member of the East Team in the sixth annual Whataburger Cactus Bowl Division II All-Star Game on Jan. 6, 2006 in Kingsville, Texas.

The Bulldogs’ top receiver the last three seasons, Brewster caught a team-leading 60 passes for 921 yards and seven TD’s in 11 contests this fall. He registered five 100-yard plus receiving-game performances in the 2005 campaign, including a season-best 137 yards and a pair of TD’s on eight catches versus Northern Michigan (10/15). Brewster’s 921 receiving yards marked the 10th highest single-season total in the program’s history. A two-time (2004-05) FSU Most Valuable Offensive Skill Player Award winner, Brewster ranked 36th on the final NCAA DIvision II national statistical leaders list in receiving yards per game (83.7 ypg.), 46th in receptions per game (5.5 avg.), and 98th in all-purpose yards (107.7 ypg.).

Brewster finished a noteworthy career as Ferris State’s second all-time leading receiver with 3,184 career receiving yards and 25 TD’s on 234 receptions in 43 contests. He also was fifth among the GLIAC’s career receiving yardage leaders with 2,923 total yards on 213 catches in league games only. Brewster, a 2004 honorable mention All-America pick by both the Hansen's Football Gazette and D2Football.com, is currently listed third on FSU’s career leaders chart in kickoff returns (1,197 yds.), fourth in punt returns (588 yds.), fifth in all-purpose yards (5,029 yds.), and eighth in scoring (164 pts.).

A three-year starter at right guard, Williams was also tabbed an All-Northwest Region Honorable Mention selection by D2Football.com last month. He played an integral part this season in helping the Bulldogs’ offense rank 46th nationally in passing (231.2 ypg.), 74th in total offense (350.0 ypg.), and 84th in scoring offense (23.5 ppg.). The offensive lineman was awarded second-team all-conference recognition this fall and was a two-time (2004-05) FSU offensive co-captain. The three-time (2003-05) GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree was chosen as Ferris State’s Most Valuable Offensive Lineman for 2005. Williams attained honorable mention all-conference recognition during his sophomore season in 2002 along with being bestowed with the team’s Most Improved Offensive Player Award.

Ferris State concluded the 2005 season with a 3-8-0 overall record, which included a 3-7-0 conference ledger.
