FERRIS' TERRY CHOSEN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bulldog Tailback Runs For National Single-Game Rushing Mark
 | Senior Andrew Terry etched his name into the NCAA Division II record books with his 410-yard rushing performance against Findlay Saturday night. |
Senior tailback Andrew Terry (Kentwood/Grand Rapids Creston) of the Ferris State University football team started to reap the rewards of his NCAA Division II single-game record 410 rushing yards in the Bulldogs' 35-7 conference home triumph over Findlay Saturday (Oct. 2) night by being honored as this week's (Oct. 4) Wilson/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Offensive Player of the Week.
Terry's 410 yards on the ground established a new NCAA-II rushing mark, eclipsing the 405 yards set by Kentucky State's Alvon Brown against Kentucky Wesleyan in 2000 (Sept. 16). Terry finished 31 yards shy of equaling the 441 rushing yards by Marietta's Dante Brown versus Baldwin-Wallace in 1996 (Oct. 5) for all four NCAA divisions. He also set new GLIAC and Ferris State single-game records, bettering the 329 yards by Chris Pulliams against Saginaw Valley State in the 1995 regular-season finale (Nov. 11).
In Saturday's Findlay contest at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich., Terry averaged 10.8 yards per carry on 38 rush attempts and accounted for the game's initial score on a first-quarter 82-yard touchdown run. In the first half alone, Terry had rushed for 256 yards on 21 carries for a 12.2 average per attempt.
With his selection, Terry now joins senior defensive tackle Whitney Bell (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) as current Bulldog football team members to receive the weekly conference honor. Bell was chosen as the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week a week ago (Sept. 27).
In six games this season, Terry has ran for a career-best 937 yards on 167 carries and six touchdowns. He's averaging 5.6 yards per rush attempt and 156.2 yards an outing to date.
With the historic performance, Terry extended his 100-yard plus game rushing streak to four straight as the backfield performer is averaging 208 yards per game (832 total yds.) with five touchdowns to date in that four-game span.
Terry has currently racked up 1,314 career rushing yards to go along with eight career touchdowns on 253 carries in 31 career contests. He's averaging 5.2 yards per attempt and 42.4 yards per game during his FSU career. In receiving, Terry has eight career receptions for 34 yards. The 5-8, 196-pound back is 28 yards away from tying Lou Melchiorre's (1990-93) 13th-place 1,342-career yard total among the Bulldogs' all-time rushing leaders.
Ferris State, which is midst its best start since 1999, puts its five-game winning streak on the line against the nationally-ranked and 2003 NCAA-II National Champion runner-up the North Dakota Fighting Sioux this Saturday (Oct. 9) in Grand Forks, N.D. A 2 p.m. (EDT) kickoff is scheduled for the non-conference contest at the Alerus Center on the UND campus. The contest represents the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
