BREWSTER NAMED GLIAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
 | Carlton Brewster honored as the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in Ferris State's win at Wayne State Saturday. |
Sophomore flanker Carlton Brewster (Grand Rapids/Creston) has been named this week's (Sept. 29) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Special Teams Player of the Week as a result of his noteworthy performance in the Bulldogs' 29-16 conference triumph over Wayne State last Saturday (Sept. 27) at Wayne State Stadium in Detroit, Mich.
Brewster, who accumulated 188 total return yards versus Wayne State, recorded a career-high 108 yards (36.0 ypr.) on three punt returns and also posted 80 yards (26.7 ypr.) on three kickoff returns. One of his punt returns resulted in a 65-yard touchdown in the third quarter. In receiving, he caught a team-high four passes for 37 yards with a long of 11 yards.
The 2002 FSU Special Teams Player of the Year, Brewster has currently compiled 508 career yards in kickoff returns on 28 attempts (18.1 ypr.) in 14 contests. He also has registered 370 yards on 33 career punt returns (11.2 ypr.). The 5-11, 192-pound wideout is presently 72 punt return yards shy of tying Willie Bouyer (1969-72; 442 yds.) for fourth place among Ferris' all-time punt return leaders.
The GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week accolade represents the second time Brewster has received the honor in his career. Last season (Oct. 26) in the Bulldogs' 24-3 home victory over nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley State, he had five punt returns for a season-high 104 yards (20.7 ypr.), including a third-quarter 89-yard TD return. Brewster also had a 15-yard reception in the game.
Brewster joins senior tailback Derek Fudge (Gibonston, Fla./East Bay) as FSU players to receive conference player of the week kudos this season. Fudge was recognized as the GLIAC's Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 8) following his career-high 273 yard rushing and two TD effort in Ferris' 25-20 season-opening non-league victory at Hillsdale (Sept. 6).
Ferris State hosts the Northwood Timberwolves this Saturday (Oct. 4) evening at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich. A 7 p.m. (EDT) kickoff is scheduled for the GLIAC encounter.
