2002 COMMUNITY PIGSKIN PREVIEW SLATED FOR AUGUST 25
Both the 2002 Ferris State University and Big Rapids High School football programs will be recognized at the eighth annual Community Pigskin Preview, which will be held Sunday, August 25, at FSU’s Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.
The event, which is open to the public free of charge and sponsored by the Ferris State Gridiron Club, will feature introductions of the respective 2002 Ferris State and Big Rapids High School players, coaching staffs and cheerleaders.
Complimentary hot dogs and refreshments which are being donated by Carter’s Foods of Big Rapids will be served at 7:30 p.m. (EDT). Numerous raffle prizes will be given away throughout the event. Both Ferris State Athletics Department staff and FSU Gridiron Club members will be on hand to distribute schedule cards, posters and brochures.

Ferris State embarks on its 94th season of varsity competition this fall as the Bulldogs open their 2002 campaign Saturday, Sept. 7, hosting the Hillsdale College Chargers in non-conference action. Opening kickoff for the Fireworks Night outing is slated for 7 p.m. (EDT) at Top Taggart Field with the annual post-game fireworks display to be held immediately after the game’s conclusion. The contest will also represent the return of former FSU head coach Keith Otterbein along with former Bulldog assistants Barry Fagan and Cary Marquell. Otterbein, who has spent the last six years at Ball State University before taking over the head coaching position at his alma mater in December 2001, compiled a nine-year 60-39-3 (.603) coaching mark at Ferris State.
A week later (Sept. 14), Ferris State opens Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action as the Bulldogs play host to their archrival and 2001 NCAA Division II National Championship runner-up Grand Valley State University Lakers. Starting time for the Community Night game is slated for 7 p.m. (EDT).
The Big Rapids High School Varsity and Junior Varsity teams kickoff their 2002 season against Ludington in non-league play. The Cardinals’ Junior Varsity squad hosts Ludington Thursday, Aug. 29, in a 7 p.m. (EDT) contest at Top Taggart Field while the varsity team visits Ludington Friday, Aug. 30. Start time for the encounter is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (EDT).
