CARY MARQUELL JOINS FERRIS STATE COACHING STAFF
Cary Marquell, who had served as an assistant coach at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland the last two seasons, has been hired as Ferris State University's defensive secondary coach and special teams coordinator in an announcement made by sixth-year FSU head coach Jeff Pierce.
Marquell replaces Jay Sawvel, who departed after two seasons to become an assistant coach at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Ill.
"Cary is an excellent addition to our staff," said Pierce. "He's a bright young coach, who really impresses me with his knowledge of the game. Cary is a good teacher who works well with student-athletes.
"He comes highly recommended and worked with (former FSU head coach and current Ball State University assistant coach) Keith Otterbein, so I know the type of individual he is and will be a big plus for our program," added Pierce.
A native of Eaton, Ind., Marquell had spent the last two seasons (1999 and 2000) serving as an assistant coach at SUNY-Cortland under head coach Dan MacNeill. His responsibilities at SUNY-Cortland including coaching the Red Dragons' defensive backs and serving as recruiting coordinator. Marquell also assumed the duties of assistant head coach prior to the start of the 2000 gridiron campaign. He played an integral role in the Red Dragons leading the New Jersey Athletic Conference in pass defense last fall.
Prior to SUNY-Cortland, Marquell was a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., from 1997-99 and assisted head coach Bill Lynch with the Cardinals' defensive secondary. He spent the 1996 season as an assistant at Pendleton (Ind.) High School and was responsible for instructing the linebackers.
The 27-year old Marquell was a student assistant coach (defensive backs) at Ball State in 1995 after spending the previous season at Muncie's Delta High School in an assistant coaching capacity (linebackers).
Marquell, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Ball State in 1996, was a member of the Cardinals' football program from 1992-94 and played at the linebacker position under coach Paul Schudel. He played on the 1993 squad which won the Mid-American Conference (MAC) title with a 7-0-1 conference mark (8-3-1 overall record) and competed in the Las Vegas Bowl (lost 42-33 to Utah State). While at BSU, Marquell's teammates included current National Football League (NFL) players -- Brad Maynard (Chicago Bears), Keith McKenzie (Cleveland Browns) and Blaine Bishop (Tennessee Titans). Marquell also earned a Master of Arts in Secondary Education from BSU in 1999.
A 1992 graduate of Delta High School, Marquell competed in both football (1988-91) and wrestling (1988-90) prior to earning an academic scholarship to Ball State. He received academic all-state, all-conference, all-area and all-county laurels as a senior in football while serving as team captain. As a junior in 1990, Marquell garnered honorable mention all-state accolades.
