FERRIS' JIM YATES PICKS UP GLIAC SPECIAL TEAMS HONOR THIS WEEK

Senior Kicker-Punter Claims League Weekly Honor After Solid Outing

Jim Yates Ferris State University senior kicker/punter Jim Yates (Goshen, Ind.) has been chosen as this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in FSU's 19-13 league home win over Northwood this past Saturday (Oct. 25) at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.

Yates had a solid afternoon for the Bulldogs against the Timberwolves as he converted two field goal tries from 24-yards out and punted six times for 265 yards (44.2 avg.). Three of his punts landed inside the opponents' 20-yard line and one went for 54 yards. He also kicked off five times for 316 total yards (63.2 avg.) in handling all of the Bulldogs' punting and kicking chores in the contest.

The 6-1 Yates was honored as FSU's Special Teams Player of the Year in 2007 after earning All-GLIAC Second Team plaudits. He has converted six-of-12 (.500) field goal tries this season and made 16-of-19 (.842) PAT's. Yates has also punted 39 times for 1,608 yards (41.2 avg.) with eight punts landing inside the 20-yard line and six measuring 50 yards or more. He's third overall to date in punting average among the GLIAC leaders this season and ranks tied for fifth with six made field goals.

Yates posted Ferris' fourth-best single-season figure with 12 made field goals in 2007, which ranked second among the GLIAC leaders last season. His 73 total points last year were the school’s most in a season since former tailback Derek Fudge netted 90 points on 15 touchdowns in 2003. He converted 12-of-21 field goal tries and 37-of-40 (.921) PAT attempts last campaign.

Yates' 4,668 career punting yards to date represents the program's seventh-best career figure. He's averaged 39.6 yards on 118 career punts in his Bulldog career. In 2005, Yates' career-best 39.5 yards per punt average was the fourth-highest figure in school single-season history. Also, his 18 career made field goals is listed seventh among the program's career leaders.

His selection this week marks the fourth time a Bulldog player has earned one of the GLIAC's weekly award honors this campaign as senior All-America defensive tackle Jake Visser (Coopersville) and junior safety Chad Wilson (Howell) both previously picked up recognition on the defensive side while junior quarterback Kyle Parrish (Garden Grove, Calif./Santiago) was an offensive selection this year.

It also represents the third time in his career he has claimed the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor as he previously was recognized with the same award twice during the 2007 season.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the GLIAC with Saturday's victory. The Bulldogs will next visit the Hillsdale Chargers for their final regular-season road game this Saturday (Nov. 1) at HC's Muddy Waters Stadium in Hillsdale, Mich. Kickoff for the league encounter is set for 2:30 p.m. (EDT).

Saturday's contest can be heard live locally on WYBR (102.3 FM) with Jason DaDay handling the play-by-play duties. In addition, a live audio & video pay-per-view webcast will be available via B2 Networks and can be accessed through the FSU Athletics Website at www.ferris.edu/sports.
