FERRIS FOOTBALL COACH AMONG NATIONAL COACH OF YEAR CANDIDATES
Bulldog Fans Can Vote For FSU's Jeff Pierce In Liberty Mutual Online Voting
Ferris State University football head coach Jeff Pierce, the all-time winningest coach in the FSU program's history, is once again among the candidates for the prestigious 2008 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.
The award honors the college football coach who best exemplifies responsibility and excellence both on and off the field. A selection committee including members of the College Football Hall of Fame, the national media and fans will help choose the winner.
This year's Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year honor will go to one coach in each of the four NCAA divisions. The awards process will take place over the course of the entire college football season. The winner in each division will be chosen using a combination of fan votes and votes received from members of the 2008 Coach of the Year Selection Committee. The Selection Committee is comprised of respective members of the College Football Hall of Fame and national media.
Liberty Mutual also will award $50,000 to support the winning coach's civic and charitable activities, and $20,000 for scholarships to the alumni association of the winning coach's school.
Fans across the country are encouraged to visit www.coachoftheyear.com between now and December 6 to vote for the college football coach who they believe embodies responsibility - not only to his own team and players, but also in society and in his community. All football head coaches at a NCAA-member college or university at all division levels are eligible for consideration.
Following the initial fan voting (Sept. 17-Dec. 6), a second phase (Dec. 12-22) will be conducted and feature online fan voting for the finalists. The finalists will also be judged individually by the selection committee. The winning coaches will be announced on Dec. 31.
Pierce, who's currently in his 14th year as head coach at Ferris State, boasts a 88-58-0 overall coaching record (.603 winning pct.) to date. He was honored as the 1995 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's (GLIAC) Coach of the Year. In 2006, Pierce was among the top vote-getters at the NCAA Division II level for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.
