Blog 5: Ferris Ends Regular Season Schedule with Win at Pfeiffer
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – The new calendar year, 2009, has Ferris State University’s women’s tennis team with a record of 5-4.
The Bulldogs began the calendar year with a loss to Bellarmine, won at Indianapolis and next swept home matches against Albion, Hope and Calvin. Ferris then packed its bags and traveled south to the Carolinas for four matches. Ferris was 1-3 against tough competition with losses to Coastal Carolina, Lander and Francis Marion prior to a win over Pfeiffer in the trip’s finale.
The win over Pfeiffer was nice because it boosted Ferris’ record above .500 to 11-10 overall. In that match, the Bulldogs started strong in doubles as Amy Ingle and Natalie Diorio were 8-1 winners, at the top flight; Jennifer Prisner and Jessie Conklin were 8-4 winners, at No. 2; and Melissa Flowers and Mary Coleman scored an 8-1, at No. 3.
In singles competition, Ferris was perhaps even more dominant as all six competitors won in straight sets to pull off the sweep. Ingle played No. 1, Flowers was No. 2, Diorio was No. 3, Prisner was No. 4, Conklin played No. 5 and Coleman competed at No. 6.
The win was a nice way to cap the regular-season portion of Ferris’ schedule.
