BLOG 39: Ferris Basketball Teaming With Special Olympics Is Great
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – Special Olympics is near and dear to the hearts and minds of a lot of people across the country.
Locally, the Ferris State University men’s and women’s basketball teams had an opportunity to do something nice for Special Olympics. Selfishly, it’s always a great feeling for coaches and student-athletes at Ferris to have opportunities to interact with Special Olympians.
The event, held March 25 at Crossroads Charter Academy in Big Rapids, was the fourth annual charity Head-to-Head and Hand-in-Hand Special Olympics Benefit Game. The event was organized and sponsored by the Ferris Professional Recreation Association and Gamma Epsilon Tau. Donations and proceeds support Special Olympics of Michigan and their efforts to provide uniforms, equipment, food, transportation and tournament fees for the athletes of Special Olympics.
One of the best aspects of these types of events, beyond raising necessary funds, is the outreach between the University and the community. Events like this benefit game bridge gaps and show we’re all far more alike than we are different when you get right down to it.
