BLOG 15: Tough loss for Ferris women in shootout at Ashland

By Sandy Gholston

FSU Basketball ASHLAND, Ohio – Whenever the women’s basketball teams of Ferris State University and Ashland University play, the games always seems to be high-scoring affairs.

Thursday night’s Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference showdown between the two teams, in AU’s Kates Gymnasium, was no different in that respect. Ashland got a big defensive stop in the end to hang on for a 92-89 win over Ferris.

The Bulldogs fell in spite of a 24-point performance from senior shooting guard Teghan Thelen, 21 points from sophomore guard Becci Houdek, 17 points from sophomore forward Tiara Adams and 15 points from senior forward Caitlin Hutchison. It was a great and balanced scoring night for Ferris.

We know the Bulldogs have the firepower to put big-time point totals on the scorebook – even on the road against a good league opponent like Ashland. It’s impressive to go on the road and hit 54 percent of shots from the field.

The only trouble for the Bulldogs, however, is that Ashland was even more impressive with its scoring led by the outstanding guard, Lynsey Warren, who finished with 24 points. Ashland, much like Ferris, was in a nice scoring rhythm throughout the game and more than kept pace with the visiting Bulldogs.

The Ashland contest was the second of three straight road games to begin the season. The Bulldogs were 74-64 winners over archrival Grand Valley State University on Monday and can finish the road trip with a 2-1 record with a win over Tiffin University on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
