BIG RAPIDS – A team is the sum of its parts, and Jenna Guay knows full well Ferris State University needed just about every one of its parts in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference hardwood action on Saturday afternoon.
The Bulldogs used a true team effort to score a 69-66 win over Lake Superior State in a battle of two teams that entered the contest with identical 8-11 conference records and clinging to their chances of making the league tournament.
Senior Day is more than just a day to honor the seniors for their contributions to a college basketball program. Senior Day, oftentimes, is a proving ground for seniors to shine on what is their day. Guay and her fellow seniors accounted for 48 of the team’s 69 points in the crucial win over the Lakers in Jim Wink Arena to improve to 9-11 in the league standings.
“It just feels amazing to have our team come together the way it did to get a big win like that one,” said Guay, a 6-foot-1 senior from Escanaba who had 12 points, nine rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots against Lake Superior as she clocked 29 minutes of work. “We were all so ecstatic about the win and it was a great win because it truly took every single one of us to get it done.”
Ferris is riding a five-game winning streak, and playing its best ball of the season entering the final weekend (with road games at Northwood, Thursday, and at Wayne State, on Saturday) prior to conference tournament play.
“We are coming together and playing a lot better as a team and we’re playing with a lot of confidence,” said Guay, who is averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds this season. “I would love it if we had an opportunity to make it to the GLIAC Tournament to get a chance to show how far we’ve come. But, for now, we have to get ready for these last two games of the (regular season).”
In Senior Moments, Sandy Gholston interviewed each of the six men’s and women’s basketball seniors from Ferris State University to find out what some of their thoughts were entering the final regular-season college basketball weekend of their careers. The student-athletes interviewed were Mark Gildersleeve and Jason Holder of the men’s basketball team and Caitlin Hutchison, Jenna Guay, Teghan Thelen and Ashley Fleming of the women’s basketball team.
