BIG RAPIDS – “Volley for the Cure” is an outstanding effort on the part of Ferris’ volleyball team to strengthen breast cancer awareness and raise funds for research.
The Bulldog volleyball team is teaming with the Susan P. Wheatlake Foundation to sponsor this event on Friday in Ewigleben Sports Arena as Ferris hosts Hillsdale in a 7 p.m. Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in Big Rapids.
The Bulldogs will be dressed in pink uniforms for tonight’s contest to help raise funds for breast cancer research. Event organizers are encouraging cancer patients to attend Friday’s match and wear pink for free admission. Ferris plans to donate $3 for every paid ticket sold to benefit the Susan P. Wheatlake Women’s Cancer and Wellness Fund.
The pink uniforms – modeled this week by Bulldog players Andrea Rich, Candice Marut and Amanda Kettlewell – will later be auctioned off as part of an effort to offset the cost of the uniforms and then raise money for research. Uniforms will be displayed with a signup next to the uniform of each individual player. Bidding starts at $30.
“This effort is just a small piece of our overall mission to connect with the community," Ferris State Associate Athletics Director Jon Coles said. “We are excited to be able to help such an honorable, respected, and worthy cause like the Susan P. Wheatlake Foundation.”
