BIG RAPIDS – Playing about as tough a schedule as possible, Ferris State University women’s soccer coach Neathan Gibson was looking for his team to rise to the occasion on Friday afternoon against Ashland.
Five days removed from a heartbreaking 3-0 loss to national power Grand Valley State, the Bulldogs did indeed bounce back with a 2-1 win over the Eagles in a contest played at the FSU Soccer Field.
“Before the Grand Valley game the girls had been playing well, but had just had some tough luck in some matches and had a little tough luck against Grand Valley,” Gibson said as he has been pleased to see his team compete with higher levels of confidence. “We’ve been doing much better in our training and things are starting to pay off for the ladies. That is one of the reasons it was so nice to see them be able to come away with this win against a very good Ashland team.”
Tammy Unsworth scored her first goal of the season, unassisted, as she fired in a shot from the left side into the net near the far post. That goal occurred at 11:48. The Bulldogs held a one-goal lead at the break. Thanks to a Bri Borgman goal assisted by Julia Zilan, at 51:15, Ferris earned a 2-0 lead.
Ashland scored, at 74:01, but the Bulldogs held strong for the win.
