BLOG 3: Back, Unsworth are worthy veteran captains
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State University’s women’s soccer program should be in good hands with the captain duties being handled by veterans Tammy Unsworth and Jackie Back this fall for third-year head coach Neathan Gibson’s squad.
The two seniors are solid players and should be quality leaders by example as well as in other ways this season for the Bulldogs. Back, who is an Ortonville native, was a 2007 All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Second-Team pick last season as a defender, while Unsworth, a speedy forward who comes from White Lake, was a 2007 All-GLIAC Second-Team choice as well representing the Bulldogs. The team is in the process of mixing a lot of veteran players in with a large class of talented newcomers ready to make an impact on the program’s future.
The team kicks off its season at the Grand Valley State Tournament in Allendale. Ferris will see some regional competition as it begins the 2008 campaign with a contest against Southern Indiana on Friday at 4 p.m. The Bulldogs wrap up tournament play at GVSU with a match against Tampa (Fla.) scheduled for 12 p.m. on Sunday.
