BIG RAPIDS – The building blocks are being put in place for the future of the Ferris State University women's soccer program.
One of the big steps for Ferris will be Tuesday as head coach Neathan Gibson’s women’s soccer team gets ready for Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition. This is a big of a historic game as Ferris will be hosting a post-season tournament game at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids for the first time in the program’s history. Ferris will welcome Northern Michigan for a first-round match in the GLIAC Women’s Soccer Tournament beginning at 2 p.m.
Ferris (8-8-1), seeded fourth in the tournament, will have a golden opportunity to grab some of the conference respect that it so covets as all competitive athletes and coaches do against the fifth-seeded Wildcats. The program is building toward being a contender in a conference that features one of the premier NCAA Division II soccer teams in the nation in powerhouse Grand Valley State.
Getting to GVSU’s high level is a challenge for any program, but the Bulldogs clearly are moving in the right direction and a strong run in this fall’s GLIAC Tournament could open some eyes to the kind of program Gibson yearns to build at Ferris.
