BLOG 3: Ferris men’s golf team closing in on the end of fall
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – In a competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s golf tournament, Ferris State University ended up fifth in the league.
The race for the championship was a tight one as Grand Valley State ended up narrowly winning the GLIAC at 863 – a single stroke better than second-place Findlay (864). Wayne State took third at 866 while Saginaw Valley State was fourth (870). The Bulldogs carded an 871, as a team, to finish one stroke out of fourth place and eight off the championship pace set by GVSU at Bay City Country Club.
Kurt Valley, a junior, and Eric Lilleboe (the 2007-08 GLIAC Men’s Golf Athlete of the Year), a junior, led the charge for Ferris. Valley tied for fourth place (213) and Lilleboe earned a share of sixth at 215.
As a team, during the fall season, Ferris had a pair of second-place finishes. The Bulldogs took runner-up honors at the 14-team Indianapolis Invitational (Sept. 15-16) in Camby, Ind. The other second-place team effort was days later, in South Haven, at the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament in a field of 21 teams.
Ferris’ last scheduled tournament is in Ocoee, Fla. At the Rollins Invitational (Oct. 27-28). After that, the team is idle until the Ashland Invitational in Ashland, Ohio (March 28-29).
