BLOG 46: Bulldog men may add more pieces
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – Ferris did not announce any men’s basketball signings in the early-signing period, but could add some new guys to the puzzle prior to the 2009-10 campaign.
Last season, the Bulldogs added several late signees that became integral parts of the 2008-09 season as Josh Young, Austin Randel and Verdell Billingsley all made key contributions to Ferris’ cause. Jon Yeazel joined and sat out, but could be in the mix in the upcoming season for the Bulldogs as he would be a senior.
Historically, the men’s team has been late in adding recruits after guys weigh some of their options at the Division I level. The same could be true this season for the Bulldogs who may seek front-court depth and any other quality players they could add who fit their style of play.
Ferris may look for another big man to help out on the defensive boards. While the team was tough on the offensive glass (outrebounding opponents 399-298) it was slightly outrebounded on the defensive boards (634-609). Head coach Bill Sall may want to add a strong rebounding power forward that can help strengthen Ferris on the glass and from an interior defense standpoint.
Another factor in late recruiting will be what players return and what players may leave during the off-season. The Bulldogs had a key personnel loss last year that impacted its recruiting. However, if Ferris can keep the heart and soul of this roster intact things will be looking up for the Bulldogs next season.
