BLOG 19: Great showing by the Bulldog men against Ashland
By Sandy Gholston
ASHLAND, Ohio – Ferris State University was desperately seeking a signature-type win this week, and the Bulldogs got it Thursday against Ashland University.
Ferris put together a strong offensive performance in a 96-91 win over the Eagles in Kates Gymnasium. Ashland jumped out early with a big lead, but the Bulldogs rallied late in the first half, grabbed a lead and held on in the second half to secure the critical Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference road win.
One of the great things about this win is it gives the Bulldogs an opportunity to salvage a win – maybe two (with a win over Tiffin University Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.) – to end up potentially 2-1 in the face of three consecutive road games to start the conference portion of their schedule.
Ironically, Ashland employed a little of the 1-3-1 zone defense against the Bulldogs that was utilized so successfully by Grand Valley State University Monday evening in a 72-62 win over the Bulldogs, in Allendale. This time, however, the Bulldogs functioned far better against the defense. Ferris was composed, moved the ball better and attacked when it had opportunities.
Another major reason for the Bulldogs’ success was the good play of Josh Young, who poured in a career-best 30 points and hauled down 11 rebounds. Young has been an effective scorer for Ferris – almost like money in the bank – when his jump shot is falling and he is playing relaxed and operating within the frame work of the offense.
