BIG RAPIDS – Aaron Lewicki, in last Saturday’s win over Western Michigan, got back to playing the brand of college hockey Ferris head coach Bob Daniels knows the winger is capable of playing.
He wisely heeded the words of the coaching staff, Daniels in particular.
“Coach has really been on me to pick it up and to become more physical and to get back to the way I was playing before and the way I’ve been playing when things have been going well for me,” said Lewicki, a junior center from Livonia who has three goals and an assist this season through five games. “We knew we kind of came out a little flat in the first game against Western Michigan and so we wanted to get a good jump in that second game, being back on our home ice, and we did that. I was fortunate in that I was able to capitalize on some good chances.”
Lewicki was on fire to begin the game as he scored his second goal of the campaign just 59 seconds into the game off assists from forward Brendan Connolly and goaltender Pat Nagle. A couple of minutes later, Lewicki was back on the scoreboard as he scored (3:05) his third of the young campaign off assists from Connolly and defenseman Scott Wietecha for a quick 2-0 lead.
“It’s always a good feeling when you can get that first one like that and get it so early in the game,” replied Lewicki when asked about the snowball-type effect he personally experienced after his game-opening goal almost set the stage for the next one. “When you get that first goal like that then you start to feel some confidence. I did feel confidence and I was able to get another one.”
Ferris (2-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association) hopes to keep momentum going this weekend against a solid Lake Superior State team making the trip across the bridge and down to Big Rapids for a two-game series in Ewigleben Ice Arena. The Bulldogs and Lakers battle Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. and then late Saturday afternoon at 5:05 p.m.
