BLOG 14: Nelson steps up big in his debut between the pipes
By Sandy Gholston
BIG RAPIDS – Rookie goaltender Taylor Nelson showed flashes of what could be ahead of him in his still-developing career.
Nelson picked up the first win of his college career and helped the Bulldogs to their first win of the season, a 5-2 victory against Canisius, in Ewigleben Ice Arena.
The freshman from Regina, Saskatchewan (a place many will remember as the hometown of former Bulldog All-American player Chris Kunitz) had 21 saves, including 11 stops in the third period alone, as the Bulldogs slammed the door on the Griffs and secured the much-needed win to bounce back from Friday’s 5-2 loss to Canisius.
As part of a long season, Ferris fully understands it needs to have a second capable goaltender. The 6-foot-1 and 171-pound Nelson has showed signs of being that guy after a solid performance in the exhibition win over Windsor and again on Saturday in regular-season action.
While Ferris will be young between the pipes, with sophomore Pat Nagle and Nelson, the team does appear to have a pair of guys capable of getting the job done.
The Bulldogs are back on the ice this coming weekend when they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa. to take on Robert Morris in a pair of non-conference contests. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:35 p.m.
