BLOG 27: It was a wild weekend of football in the GLIAC

By Sandy Gholston

BIG RAPIDS – The featured football contest in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was supposed to be between No. 2 Grand Valley State University and No. 25 Saginaw Valley State University.

GLIAC Logo The much-anticipated contest failed to live up to the billing as the Lakers crashed the rainy party in University Center and exited Wickes Stadium with a 36-0 win over the host Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. The strength of Grand Valley’s team, and the number of weapons head coach Chuck Martin has at his disposal, make the Lakers a formidable challenge for any team pondering an upset of first-place Grand Valley.

In other action, Ferris moved into a first-place tie with the Lakers on the strength of its 14-0 win over Findlay at Top Taggart Field.

Also, Wayne State was a 6-0 winner over Indianapolis. Saturday’s victory for the Warriors was a quality one as offense was tough to come by for both squads.

Ashland earned its first win as it scored a 48-41 win against Michigan Tech. The Eagles were too good of a team to remain winless for long. The fact Ashland bounced back to post 48 points shows the potency of that offense and the capability of Ferris’ defense (a defense that held Ashland in check last weekend).

Tiffin, a newcomer to the conference this season, finally earned its first GLIAC win as the Dragons outlasted Northern Michigan, 34-28, in a ridiculous four overtimes.

The other GLIAC contest saw Hillsdale get back to its winning ways as it put a 26-7 win in the books at the expense of a struggling Northwood team.
