Junior guard Val Scott was selected to the GLIAC’s North Division First Team and was named the Bulldog’s "Most Valuable Player." Scott led the squad in the majority of the statistical categories, including 3-pointers made (69), steals (85) and scoring average (16.3). She ranks eighth on the all-time Ferris scoring charts with 934 points and should quickly reach 1,000 career points next year.
Scott’s outstanding 1996-97 season catapulted her into the FSU record books, as her 69 treys set a school mark for 3-pointers made in a season. She attempted 202, also a new record. Additionally, with her senior year remaining, she has already set the record for most steals in a career at 184.
Scott’s long-distance shot contributed to the Bulldogs breaking two team records as well. Their twelve 3-pointers at Northern Michigan on January 6 set a new game-high, while their season total of 137 broke another record.
While Scott was FSU’s leading scorer for the second straight season, junior Julie Anthony claimed rebounding honors again this year, averaging 7.7 boards per outing. She was the only other Bulldog besides Scott to average in double-digits for scoring average at a 10.8 points a game. Anthony ranks eighth in all-time rebounding at Ferris with her current total of 565.
Fellow junior Jill Thayer received the award for "Best Defensive Player" this season. She started all 26 games, averaged 4.2 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest, and ranked third in both steals and assists.
