The Ferris State University women's basketball team will battle the Lake Superior State Lakers in the quarterfinal round of the 2002-03 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament this Saturday (March 1) with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. (EST) at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

FSU, which will be making its fourth consecutive conference tournament appearance, previously claimed runner-up honors in 1999-00. Last season, the Bulldogs fell to eventual champion Hillsdale 90-71 in a quarterfinal contest at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Ferris, which is presently 15-10 overall and 10-8 in league play, claimed the second wild card seed in the tournament following last Saturday's (Feb. 22) 72-66 loss at Michigan Tech. The Lakers are the GLIAC North Division's top seed with a 20-5 overall record and a 15-3 GLIAC mark. LSSU has twice defeated FSU this campaign, posting a 91-59 home win (1/25) and a 88-71 victory (2/6) at Ferris' Jim Wink Arena.

The other quarterfinal round games include Michigan Tech (#1 wild card) at Hillsdale (#1 seed South), Northern Michigan (#2 seed North) at Grand Valley State (#3 seed North) along with Gannon (#3 seed South) at Wayne State (#2 seed South).

The GLIAC Tournament will return to on-campus sites this season for the first time since the 1998 campaign. The four previous GLIAC men’s and women’s basketball tournaments were held at a neutral location with the last three taking place at the DeltaPlex.

The tournament semifinal games are slated for Friday, March 7, and the title contest will be held Saturday, March 8. Both the semifinals and finals will take place at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner of the GLIAC Tournament championship game receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, which will be held March 14-17 at a campus site to be determined.

The Bulldogs, who have compiled a 3-4 (.429) overall GLIAC Tournament record to date, will be making their fifth all-time tournament appearance. FSU, which has won at least 10 games in a campaign 12 times in the last 13 years, is currently in the midst of its seventh consecutive 10-win season. Ferris is ranked 10th in the latest (Feb. 19) NCAA-II Great Lakes Region poll.
