FSU Women’s Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women’s basketball team will conclude the 2002-03 regular-season campaign this weekend (Feb. 20 & 22) in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. FSU will visit the Northern Michigan Wildcats this Thursday (Feb. 20) for a 5:30 p.m. (EST) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at NMU’s Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich. The Bulldogs will then face the Michigan Tech Huskies this Saturday (Feb. 22) with tipoff slated for 1 p.m. (EST) in MTU’s Student Development Complex Gymnasium at Houghton, Mich. The Bulldogs, who are presently 14-9 overall and 9-7 in league action, have clinched their fourth consecutive GLIAC Tournament berth and are ranked 10th in the current (Feb. 12) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional rankings. FSU has won its last three games to date.
Last Week - Ferris State posted a 75-69 home league win over the nationally-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers last Monday (Feb. 10). FSU then defeated the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals 81-45 in its regular-season home finale last Saturday (Feb. 15). Junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) registered 30 points and six rebounds to lead FSU versus the Lakers. Junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Horwitz scored a game-high 17 points, DeMartin had 10 points and freshman forward Darcie Philp (Clare) totaled 10 points against SVSU. Ferris shot a season-high 60.4 percent (29-48) from the floor in the win over GVSU.
Last Season - Ferris State finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 14-12 overall mark, including a fourth-place 10-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. The Bulldogs advanced to the GLIAC Tournament for the third consecutive season. Senior forward Patti Larson (Kalkaska) and sophomore forward Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central) are Ferris’ 2002-03 team captains.
The Bulldog Tradition - The Ferris State women’s basketball program has compiled a 337-374 (.474) all-time mark in its 28 previous campaigns. The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division crown, advanced to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation’s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which also claimed GLIAC Tournament runner-up honors in 1999-00, has ranked among the nation’s top 25 academic teams four consecutive seasons.
Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Fifth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career 84-49 (.632) coaching record at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).
DeMartin Moving Up - Lucy DeMartin, who has an active 28-game double-figure scoring streak, presently has 1,065 career points and needs 33 more to tie Julie Anthony (1,098; 1994-98) for eighth place on FSU’s career scoring leaders chart. She ranks seventh (.347; 66-190) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is two treys shy of tying Carrie Roys (68; 1996-00) for eighth place on the school’s career made three-point field goal list. DeMartin, who currently ranks sixth (.790; 245-310) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, presently has 241 career assists and needs 41 more to tie Tanya Potcova (282; 1993-96) for seventh place among FSU’s leaders. She has 128 career steals to date and is two short of matching Janet Glaza’s (130; 1988-91) ninth-place career total. DeMartin is averaging 19.4 points per game in her last seven appearances to date.
GLIAC Player Of The Week - Bridget Horwitz has been selected this week's GLIAC North Division Player of the Week after totaling 47 points, 13 rebounds, six blocks and five assists while shooting 83-percent (20-24) from the floor in FSU's two wins last week. Ferris has claimed the award four times to date this campaign as Horwitz was previously honored once (12/9) and Lucy DeMartin received the award twice (12/2, 12/16). Horwitz currently has made 397 career field goals and is 26 shy of tying Julie Anthony’s (423; 1994-98) seventh-place career mark. The 6-2 Horwitz presently has 84 career blocks and needs 89 more to reach Mary Patterson’s (173; 1984-87) school-record career total. A 2001-02 All-GLIAC Second-Team pick, Horwitz is averaging a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game and ranks second (17.1 ppg) among Ferris' scoring leaders. Horwitz, who currently ranks eighth (.486; 397-817) on FSU’s career field goal percentage chart, attained her 500th career rebound versus SVSU and is 30 shy of tying Kim Cesarz (530; 1981-85) for 11th place at FSU. She has 962 career points to date and needs 38 more to become the school’s 11th player to register 1,000 career points.
Senior Captain Honored - The Ferris State women’s basketball team recognized senior captain Patti Larson following last Saturday’s Senior Day contest. The 5-9 Larson has totaled 124 points, 131 rebounds, 64 assists and 50 steals in her career to date. FSU’s only other senior, center Ann Platz (Benton Harbor/Watervliet Grace Christian) has missed all but the season opener of the current campaign due to a hand-related injury and will apply for a medical redshirt season.
Bulldog Bites - The Bulldogs are in the midst of their seventh consecutive 10-win campaign. FSU has won at least 10 games in a season 12 times in the last 13 years .......... All 12 FSU players scored at least one point in last Saturday’s contest ......... The 45 points allowed by Ferris against Saginaw Valley State were its fewest since posting a 56-42 win over the Cardinals (1/25/01). The Bulldogs held SVSU to only 20 first-half points and forced 23 turnovers en route to securing their ninth consecutive series’ victory ........ Freshman guard Erin Miller (Niles) has registered six double-figure scoring performances in her last eight outings to date. She dished out a personal career-high eight assists versus GVSU ........ Freshman guard Kara Gallert (Wyoming/Park) recorded a personal career-high three rebounds against GVSU while junior forward Stephanie Benear (Howell) garnered her 100th career assist in the same contest ........ Nine of Ferris' 14 wins this campaign have came by 10 points or more ......... Sophomore forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) notched her 100th career point against the Lakers ...... Darcie Philp totaled a personal career-high six rebounds versus Saginaw Valley State ....... Lucy DeMartin's current team-leading scoring average (19.0 ppg) ranks first among the school's all-time junior class leaders and is second among the GLIAC's overall statistical leaders.
Against The Opponents - FSU will travel to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this week.
Northern Michigan: NMU holds a 35-12 series’ advantage and has won the last four meetings heading into this Thursday’s 48th encounter. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk currently has a 2-8 career coaching mark against Northern Michigan and dropped an 89-79 decision in the last meeting (2/1/03) between the two teams at Big Rapids, Mich. NMU, which is directed by 14th-year head coach Mike Geary, presently is 16-7 overall and 12-4 in the GLIAC after last Saturday’s (Feb. 15) 63-60 league win at Lake Superior State. The Wildcats, who have won nine of their last 10 games to date, compiled a 20-9 overall record in 2001-02 and placed second (13-5) in the GLIAC’s North Division. NMU, which was picked to finish second in the 2002-03 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll, is led in scoring by junior center Jessica Nohl (15.6 ppg).
Michigan Tech: The Huskies maintain a 28-17 lead and have won four of the last five series’ encounters entering this Saturday’s 46th meeting. However, FSU beat Michigan Tech 81-76 in the team’s last meeting (1/30/03) held at Big Rapids, Mich. MTU is presently 13-12 overall and 8-8 in the GLIAC heading into this Thursday’s (Feb. 20) league home game versus Grand Valley State following last Saturday’s (Feb. 15) 68-67 conference loss at Northwood. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk presently has a 2-7 career coaching record against the Huskies, who have lost five of their last seven games to date. Michigan Tech, which is led in scoring by junior forward Andrea Novak (16.9 ppg), was picked to finish third in the 2002-03 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll. The Huskies, under fifth-year head coach Darla Olson, were 19-10 overall during the 2001-02 campaign and compiled a third-place 11-7 GLIAC North Division record.
On The Road - Ferris State is 121-90 (.573) overall since 1995-96 and sports a 69-58 (.543) record in road/neutral site contests during that span. The Bulldogs are 36-23 (.610) overall in road games under head coach Tracey Fisk, including a 24-19 (.558) record in conference play.
Between The Lines - Between The Lines, a weekly television program profiling Ferris State University Athletics, continues to be aired across northern Michigan on WFQX-Fox 33 every Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. (ET). The 30-minute program is hosted by Ira Childress and produced in the studios of the University’s cable Channel 7. FSU women’s basketball head coach Tracey Fisk will make appearances throughout the season. The show is also aired locally on the University's cable Channel 7 every Tuesday (7 p.m.), Wednesday (8:30 p.m.) and Sunday (7 p.m.).
GLIAC Tourney - The 2002-03 GLIAC Tournament quarterfinals will be held Saturday, March 1, at four campus sites to be determined. The top two teams in each division will host quarterfinal-round contests with parings announced this Sunday (Feb. 23). The GLIAC Tournament semifinals/finals will be held Friday-Saturday, March 7-8, at the campus site of the highest remaining seed.
