FSU Visits Lake Superior State For GLIAC Tourney Game

    FSU Women’s Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will battle the Lake Superior State Lakers in the quarterfinal round of the 2002-03 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament this Saturday (March 1) with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. (EST) at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Bulldogs, who are presently 15-10 overall and 10-8 in league action, are ranked 10th in the current (Feb. 19) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional rankings. FSU has won four of its last five games to date.

    Media Coverage - The game can be heard live on 1460-AM WBRN (Big Rapids) with Rob Bentley of the Ferris State Athletics Communications Office handling the play-by-play action.

    Ticket Information - Tickets for Saturday’s quarterfinal game are available through the Lake Superior State Athletics Ticket Office and can be obtained by calling (906) 635-2602 or via the internet at www.lssulakers.com. Ticket prices are $7 for reserved seats, $5 for adult general admission seating and $2 for students. Children five and under will be admitted free of charge.

    The Rest Of The Field - The other quarterfinal round games include Michigan Tech (#1 wild card) at Hillsdale (#1 seed South), Northern Michigan (#2 seed North) at Grand Valley State (#3 seed North) along with Gannon (#3 seed South) at Wayne State (#2 seed South). Both the MTU-Hillsdale and NMU-GVSU games will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. (EST) with the Gannon-WSU contest slated to begin at 3 p.m. (EST).

    A Look Back At Last Week - Ferris registered a 90-85 league win over the Northern Michigan Wildcats last Thursday (Feb. 20) in NMU’s Berry Events Center at Marquette, Mich. The Bulldogs then concluded the regular-season campaign with a 72-66 conference loss to the Michigan Tech Huskies last Saturday (Feb. 22) at MTU’s Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton, Mich. Junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) tallied a personal career-high 35 points versus NMU and registered a game-high 25 points at MTU. Junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) added 19 points and 13 rebounds against the Huskies along with an 11-point effort at Northern Michigan. Freshman guard Erin Miller (Niles) scored 14 points at MTU while sophomore forward Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central) totaled 12 points and nine rebounds in the win over the Wildcats.

    FSU Footnotes - Ferris State finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 14-12 overall mark, including a fourth-place 10-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. Senior forward Patti Larson (Kalkaska) and Molly Potvin are Ferris’ 2002-03 team captains. FSU has won at least 10 league games in six consecutive seasons to date.

    The Bulldog Tradition - The Ferris State women’s basketball program has compiled a 338-375 (.474) all-time mark in its 28 previous campaigns. The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division crown, advanced to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation’s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which also claimed GLIAC Tournament runner-up honors in 1999-00, has ranked among the nation’s top 25 academic teams four consecutive seasons.

    Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Fifth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career 85-50 (.630) coaching record at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

    GLIAC Tournament History - FSU, which will be making its fourth consecutive conference tournament appearance, previously claimed runner-up honors in 1999-00. Last season, the Bulldogs fell to eventual champion Hillsdale 90-71 in a quarterfinal-round contest at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs, who have compiled a 3-4 (.429) overall GLIAC Tournament record to date, will be making their fifth all-time tournament appearance. FSU, which has won at least 10 games in a campaign 12 times in the last 13 years, is currently in the midst of its seventh consecutive 10-win season. Ferris has twice reached the tourney semifinal round.

    Back On Campus - The GLIAC Tournament will return to on-campus sites this season for the first time since the 1998 campaign. The four previous GLIAC men’s and women’s basketball tournaments were held at a neutral site location, with the last three taking place at the DeltaPlex. The tournament semifinal games are slated for Friday, March 7, and the title contest will be held Saturday, March 8. Both the semifinals and finals will take place at the site of the highest remaining seed. The winner of the GLIAC Tournament championship game receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional, which will be held March 14-17 at a campus site to be determined.

    DeMartin Recognized - Lucy DeMartin was recently (Feb. 21) named to the 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball First-Team. DeMartin, who holds a 3.96 grade point average in Ferris' elementary education program, was a second-team selection during the 2001-02 campaign. FSU has had a first-team all-district pick each of the last three seasons as DeMartin joins two-time honoree Debbie Killips (2000-02), who also attained first-team Verizon Academic All-America accolades last season.

    Bulldog Bites - FSU’s 90-85 win at Northern Michigan was its first over the Wildcats in Marquette since registering a 72-63 win (1/12/95) ....... Ferris’ loss at Michigan Tech was its 16th consecutive defeat versus the Huskies at MTU’s Student Development Complex Gymnasium in Houghton. The last FSU win in the facility was a 66-46 triumph on Jan. 15, 1987 ...... Lucy DeMartin was recognized as this week’s (Feb. 24) GLIAC North Division Player of the Week after averaging 30 points and compiling seven assists, six rebounds and three steals in two games. The Bulldogs have claimed the weekly award five times this campaign as DeMartin (12/2, 12/16) and Bridget Horwitz (12/9, 2/17) were both previously honored twice ....... Erin Miller has compiled seven double-figure scoring performances in her last 10 outings to date ...... DeMartin’s current team-leading scoring average (19.8 ppg) ranks first among the school’s all-time junior class leaders and is second in the GLIAC’s overall statistical rankings ...... Junior forward Stephanie Benear (Howell) needs one rebound to notch her 200th career board.

    Against The Lakers - LSSU holds a 38-26 series’ advantage and has won the last four meetings entering this Saturday’s 65th encounter. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk currently has a 4-6 career coaching mark against Lake Superior State and dropped an 88-71 decision in the last meeting (2/6/03) between the two teams at Big Rapids, Mich. LSSU, which is directed by fifth-year head coach Kris Dunbar, presently is 20-5 overall and 15-3 in the GLIAC after last Thursday’s (Feb. 20) 92-59 league win at Saginaw Valley State. The Lakers, who have split their last four games to date, compiled a 21-6 overall record in 2001-02 and placed first (14-4) in the GLIAC’s North Division. LSSU, which was picked to finish first in the 2002-03 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll, was listed fifth in the latest (Feb. 19) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings. Senior forward Alice Duesing, the older sister of FSU sophomore forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area), presently ranks as LSSU’s leading scorer (18.8 ppg).

    Nine Points Away - Bridget Horwitz currently has 992 career points and is eight shy of becoming the 11th player in school history to register 1,000 career points. The 6-2 Horwitz presently has 84 career blocks and needs 89 more to reach Mary Patterson’s (173; 1984-87) school-record career total. A 2001-02 All-GLIAC Second-Team pick, Horwitz is averaging a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game and ranks second (16.9 ppg) among Ferris' scoring leaders. Horwitz, who currently ranks eighth (.485; 408-841) on FSU’s career field goal percentage chart, has 522 career rebounds to date and is eight shy of tying Kim Cesarz (530; 1981-85) for 11th place at FSU. Horwitz currently has made 408 career field goals and is 15 shy of tying Julie Anthony’s (423; 1994-98) seventh-place career mark.

    DeMartin Keeps Climbing - Lucy DeMartin, who has an active 30-game double-figure scoring streak, presently has 1,125 career points and needs 85 more to tie Jodi Raab (1,210; 1989-93) for eighth place on FSU’s career scoring leaders chart. She ranks eighth (.342; 67-196) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is one trey shy of tying Carrie Roys (68; 1996-00) for eighth place on the school’s career made three-point field goal list. DeMartin, who currently ranks fifth (.794; 262-330) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, presently has 248 career assists and needs 34 more to tie Tanya Potcova (282; 1993-96) for seventh place among FSU’s leaders. She has 131 career steals to date and is 10 short of matching Melissa Smiley’s (141; 1988-91) eighth-place career total.

    On The Road - Ferris State is 122-91 (.573) overall since 1995-96 and sports a 70-59 (.543) record in road/neutral site contests during that span. The Bulldogs are 37-24 (.607) overall in road games under head coach Tracey Fisk, including a 25-20 (.556) record in conference play.

    Between The Lines - Between The Lines, a weekly television program profiling Ferris Athletics, continues to be aired across northern Michigan on WFQX-Fox 33 every Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. (ET). The 30-minute program is hosted by Ira Childress and produced on-campus. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk will make appearances on the show, which is also aired locally on the University's cable Channel 7 every Tuesday (7 p.m.), Wednesday (8:30 p.m.) and Sunday (7 p.m.).
