Ferris Hosts Two GLIAC Games This Week

    FSU Women’s Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women’s basketball team will battle the nationally-ranked Grand Valley State Lakers this Monday (Feb. 10) in a 6 p.m. (EST) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs will then host the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals this Saturday (Feb. 15) in their 2002-03 regular-season home finale with league tipoff slated for 1 p.m. (EST). FSU, which is presently 12-9 overall and 7-7 in conference action, ranks 10th in the latest (Feb. 5) NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Rankings.

    A Look Back At Last Week - The Bulldogs dropped an 88-71 league home decision to the Lake Superior State Lakers last Thursday (Feb. 6). FSU then posted an 83-68 GLIAC road win last Saturday (Feb. 8) over the Northwood Timberwolves at NU’s Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Mich. Junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) led FSU with a game-high 26 points while freshman guard Erin Miller (Niles) added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists versus LSSU. DeMartin poured in 24 points, Miller had 20 points and junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) scored 13 points in the win at Northwood. FSU, which has split its last six games to date, has won 15 consecutive meetings against the Timberwolves.

    Last Season - Ferris State finished the 2001-02 campaign with a 14-12 overall mark, including a fourth-place 10-8 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division finish. The Bulldogs advanced to the GLIAC Tournament for the third consecutive season. Senior forward Patti Larson (Kalkaska) and sophomore forward Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central) are Ferris’ 2002-03 team captains.

    The Bulldog Tradition - The Ferris State women’s basketball program has compiled a 335-374 (.472) all-time mark in its 28 previous campaigns. The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division crown, advanced to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation’s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which also claimed GLIAC Tournament runner-up honors in 1999-00, has ranked among the nation’s top 25 academic teams four consecutive seasons.

    Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Fifth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career 82-49 (.626) coaching record at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

    DeMartin Hits Century Mark - Lucy DeMartin became the 10th player in school history to register 1,000 career points versus Lake Superior State. DeMartin, who has an active 26-game double-figure scoring streak, presently has been FSU’s leading scorer 12 times in the last 20 contests and now has 1,041 career points. She ranks seventh (.357; 66-185) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is two treys shy of tying Carrie Roys (68; 1996-00) for eighth place on the school’s career made three-point field goal list. DeMartin, who currently ranks seventh (.786; 235-299) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, presently has 233 career assists and needs 49 more to tie Tanya Potcova (282; 1993-96) for seventh place among FSU’s leaders. She has 121 career steals to date and is four short of matching Jill Thayer’s (125; 1994-98) 10th-place total. DeMartin is averaging 22.4 points per game in her last five appearances to date.

    Horwitz Moving Up - Bridget Horwitz currently has made 377 career field goals and is four shy of tying Debbie Killips’ (381; 1998-02) eighth-place career mark. The 6-2 Horwitz presently has 78 career blocks and needs 95 more to reach Mary Patterson’s (173; 1984-87) school-record career total. A 2001-02 All-GLIAC Second-Team pick, Horwitz is averaging a team-high 8.7 rebounds per game and ranks second (16.5 ppg) among Ferris' scoring leaders. Horwitz, who currently ranks eighth (.475; 377-793) on FSU’s career field goal percentage chart, has 487 career rebounds to date and is 43 shy of tying Kim Cesarz (530; 1981-85) for 11th place at FSU. She has 915 career points to date and ranks 13th on the school’s all-time list.

    Not Playing Like A Freshman - Erin Miller, who has posted 15 double-figure scoring games this campaign to date, presently ranks as FSU’s third-leading scorer (13.3) and has scored 10 points or more in 12 of her last 15 games to date. She needs four steals to match Valerie Scott’s (55; 1995-96) 10th-place single-season total. Miller is the squad’s steals (2.4 spg) leader and ranks second (3.2 apg) in assists to date.

    Tough To Beat At Home - Ferris is presently 30-12 (.714) overall at Jim Wink Arena. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. FSU is currently 24-10 (.706) in GLIAC play at the new Jim Wink Arena.

    Bulldog Bites - The Bulldogs are in the midst of their seventh consecutive 10-win campaign. FSU has won at least 10 games in a season 12 times in the last 13 years .......... Junior forward Stephanie Benear (Howell) needs one assist to garner her 100th career assist ........ Eight of Ferris' 12 wins this campaign have came by 10 points or more ........ Sophomore forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) currently has 96 career points and is four points away from notching her 100th career point ....... Lucy DeMartin’s current team-leading scoring average (19.6 ppg) ranks first among the school’s all-time junior class leaders and is second among the GLIAC’s overall statistical leaders. She has played the entire 40 minutes in five games this season, including two of her last three outings to date. ........... Bridget Horwitz is the conference’s second-leading rebounder (8.7 rpg) to date. She is 85 points shy of becoming the 11th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points ......... Erin Miller has registered six consecutive double-figure scoring performances and is averaging 14.8 points per game during that span ......... FSU shot a season-high 62.5 percent (5-8) from three-point range and had a season-best six blocks versus NU.

    Against The Opponents - FSU will host Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State.

    Grand Valley State: GVSU holds a 42-18 advantage heading into this Monday’s 61st encounter and defeated FSU 83-55 in the last meeting (1/18/03) at Allendale, Mich. Grand Valley State is currently 20-3 overall and 11-3 in GLIAC action after posting a 56-54 conference home victory over Lake Superior State last Saturday (Feb. 8). GVSU, which was picked to finish fourth in the 2002-03 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll, is led in scoring by junior center Julie Zeeff (15.4 ppg). The Lakers have won four of their last five games to date under first-year head coach Dawn Plitzuweit. GVSU was 13-13 overall during the 2001-02 campaign and placed fifth in the GLIAC North Division with a 7-11 mark. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk presently has a 6-4 career coaching record against the Lakers, who were ranked 14th in the latest (Feb. 5) USA Today/ESPN/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll.

    Saginaw Valley State: The Cardinals maintain a 38-19 advantage heading into this Saturday’s 58th series meeting. However, FSU has won eight straight games and beat SVSU 111-65 in the team’s last meeting (1/23/03) held at University Center, Mich. SVSU is presently 4-18 overall and 0-14 in the GLIAC heading into this Thursday’s (Feb. 13) league game at Grand Valley State after last Saturday’s (Feb. 8) 86-66 GLIAC loss at Northern Michigan. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk presently has a 8-1 career coaching record against the Cardinals, who have lost 12 consecutive games to date. Saginaw Valley State, which is led in scoring by senior guard Erin Johnson (11.5 ppg), was 10-16 overall in 2001-02 and placed sixth (4-14) in the GLIAC’s North Division. The Cardinals, who are guided by second-year head coach Kim Chandler, were picked to finish seventh in the 2002-03 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll.

    Between The Lines - Between The Lines, a weekly television program profiling Ferris State University Athletics, continues to be aired across northern Michigan on WFQX-Fox 33 every Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. (ET). The 30-minute program is hosted by Ira Childress and produced in the studios of the University’s cable Channel 7. FSU women’s basketball head coach Tracey Fisk will make regular appearances throughout the season. The show is also aired locally on the University's cable Channel 7 every Tuesday (7 p.m.), Wednesday (8:30 p.m.) and Sunday (7 p.m.).

    Ticket Prices - Individual game tickets to all FSU home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog ticket office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. A family pass can be purchased for $10. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $4.

    Looking Ahead - Ferris will conclude the 2002-03 regular-season campaign next weekend (Feb. 20-22) in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Bulldogs will battle the Northern Michigan Wildcats Thursday, Feb. 20, in a 5:30 p.m. (EST) league contest at NMU’s Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich. FSU will then visit the Michigan Tech Huskies Saturday, Feb. 22, for a 3 p.m. (EST) conference encounter in MTU’s Student Development Complex Gymnasium at Houghton, Mich.
