 | Junior guard Lucy DeMartin has been named the GLIAC Player of the Week for the third time this campaign |
Ferris State University women's basketball junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) has been selected this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week for her performance in two games last weekend (Feb. 20 & 22).
Ferris has claimed the award two consecutive weeks to date and five times overall this campaign. DeMartin was previously honored twice (12/2, 12/16) and junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) also received the accolades on two occasions (12/9, 2/17).
A 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District IV Second-Team selection, DeMartin averaged 30 points and compiled seven assists, six rebounds and three steals as FSU split two games on its Upper Peninsula trip. The 5-9 DeMartin totaled a personal career-high 35 points and sank 13-of-15 free throw attempts in FSU's 90-85 league win last Thursday (Feb. 20) at Northern Michigan, which represented the school's first win in Marquette since the 1994-95 campaign. She added 25 points and seven assists in last Saturday's (Feb. 22) 72-66 conference loss at Michigan Tech.
DeMartin, who currently has an active 30-game double-figure scoring streak, presently has 1,125 career points and needs 85 more to tie Jodi Raab (1,210; 1989-93) for eighth place on FSU’s career scoring leaders chart. She ranks eighth (.342; 67-196) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is one trey shy of tying Carrie Roys (68; 1996-00) for eighth place on the school’s career made three-point field goal list.
DeMartin, who currently ranks fifth (.794; 262-330) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, presently has 248 career assists and needs 34 more to tie Tanya Potcova (282; 1993-96) for seventh place among FSU’s leaders. She has 131 career steals to date and is 10 short of matching Melissa Smiley’s (141; 1988-91) eighth-place career total. Her current team-leading scoring average (19.8 ppg) ranks first among the school’s all-time junior class leaders and is second in the GLIAC’s overall statistical rankings.
FSU, which is presently 15-10 overall and 10-8 in league action, will battle the Lake Superior State Lakers in the quarterfinal round of the 2002-03 GLIAC Tournament this Saturday (March 1) with tipoff slated for 3 p.m. (EST) at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The Bulldogs, who have won four of their last five games to date, are ranked 10th in the current (Feb. 19) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional rankings.
