December 16, 2002
Ferris State University women's basketball junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) has been selected this week's Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division Player of the Week for her performance in last weekend's (Dec. 14-15) Saint Joseph's (Ind.) Classic at Rensselaer, Ind.
Ferris State has claimed the league award three consecutive weeks to date. DeMartin was honored two weeks ago (Dec. 2) and junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) garnered the league accolades last week (Dec. 9).
DeMartin led Ferris with 48 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds and nine steals as the Bulldogs split two contests against Wisconsin-Parkside and Saint Joseph's. The 5-9 DeMartin averaged 24 points, six assists and five rebounds per game while hitting 18-of-29 (.612) shots from the floor and five-of-eight (.625) three-point field goal attempts. She totaled a game-high 29 points along with seven assists in Ferris' 97-85 win over Saint Joseph's last Sunday (Dec. 15). DeMartin, who added a team-high 19 points in last Saturday's 68-62 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside, has led Ferris in scoring in five of the last six outings to date.
A 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District IV Second-Team honoree, DeMartin presently has scored 787 career points and needs 21 more to move into a 16th-place tie with Carrie Roys (808; 1996-00) on FSU's career scoring leaders list. DeMartin, who is one rebound shy of attaining her 200th career board, presently has scored 20 points or more in six of her last seven outings and is averaging 23.5 points per game during that span. She ranks seventh (.359; 46-128) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders to date and is two three-point baskets shy of tying Lori Young (48; 1992-94) for 12th place on Ferris' all-time chart.
DeMartin, who currently ranks third (.818; 189-231) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart, recorded the program’s fifth-best single-season free throw percentage mark (.853; 93-109) and sixth-best made free throw total (93) in 2001-02.
The 2001-02 GLIAC All-Academic Team pick presently ranks as FSU's leading scorer (22.6 ppg) this campaign. She has scored 10 points or more in 12 consecutive games dating back to last season.
