Miller Named Freshman of the Year; DeMartin, Horwitz Earn All-GLIAC Honors

Three Ferris State University women's basketball players received recognition in the annual Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Postseason Awards, which were announced Thursday (March 6) by the league office.

Freshman guard Erin Miller (Niles) was named the GLIAC's Freshman of the Year in voting conducted by the conference's head coaches. Junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) attained first-team 2002-03 All-GLIAC North Division accolades while junior forward/center Bridget Horwitz (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) was a second-team All-GLIAC North Division selection.

Miller, who posted 17 double-figure scoring performances this campaign, concluded the season ranked second among Ferris' assists leaders (3.2 apg) and was the school's third-leading scorer (12.5 ppg). The 5-7 freshman scored 10 points or more in eight of her last 11 outings and compiled four 20-plus point contests while starting all 26 games during the 2002-03 campaign. Miller, who registered the program's 11th-best single-season steals mark (57), ranked second among NCAA-II's leaders in single-game three point field goal percentage after sinking six-of-seven treys (.857) at Saint Joseph's, Ind. (12/15).

The Niles, Mich., native finished the season listed among the league leaders in five statistical categories including scoring, assists, steals, three-point field goal percentage and assist/turnover ratio. She twice led FSU in scoring and also led the squad in steals on 10 occasions along with being the team's assists leader nine times. Miller totaled 324 points, 94 rebounds and 84 assists in addition to shooting 88-percent (43-49) from the free throw line in her rookie campaign.

DeMartin's team-leading scoring average (20.2 ppg) this campaign ranked first among the school’s all-time leaders and placed second in the GLIAC’s overall statistical rankings. She compiled a school-record 525 points this season while attaining 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball Team First-Team accolades.

A 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District IV Second-Team selection, DeMartin was named the GLIAC's North Division Player of the Week three times (12/2, 12/16, 2/24) this campaign. She posted 26 double-figure scoring outings and had 13 20-plus point performances this season.

DeMartin, who currently has an active 31-game double-figure scoring streak, presently has 1,154 career points and ranks seventh on FSU’s career scoring leaders chart. She ranks seventh (.348; 70-201) among Ferris’ career three-point field goal percentage leaders and is fourth (.799; 274-343) on the school’s career free throw percentage chart to date.

Horwitz, a two-time (12/9, 2/17) GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, totaled 420 points (16.8 ppg) and a team-leading 210 rebounds (8.4 rpg) in 25 appearances this season. The 6-2 Horwitz scored 10 points or more in 22 games while notching nine double-double (scoring & rebounding) performances.

The 2001-02 All-GLIAC Second-Team pick currently ranks second in blocked shots (85), eighth in made field goals (413) and eighth in field goal percentage (.485; 413-852) on Ferris' career leaders list. Horwitz became the school’s 11th player to register 1,000 career points in Ferris' 98-65 GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal round loss at Lake Superior State (3/1/03).

FSU, which finished the year 15-11 overall and 10-8 in league action, reached the GLIAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and posted its seventh consecutive 10-win campaign during the 2002-03 season.
