FERRIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Junior Guard Lucy DeMartin Garners Team Most Valuable Player Award Accolades

Ferris State University women’s basketball junior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) was selected the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2002-03 season during the program’s annual awards banquet Saturday (April 26) at the Wheeler Pavilion on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Mich.

DeMartin's team-leading scoring average (20.2 ppg) this campaign ranked first among the school’s all-time leaders and placed second in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (GLIAC) overall statistical rankings. The two-time (2002-03) GLIAC All-Academic Team pick compiled a school-record 525 points this season while attaining 2002-03 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball First-Team accolades. The 5-9 DeMartin was also a first-team All-GLIAC North Division and Daktronics Division II All-Great Lakes Region honoree. A 2001-02 Verizon Academic All-District IV Second-Teamer, DeMartin was named the GLIAC's North Division Player of the Week three times (Dec. 2 and 16, Feb. 24) this campaign. She posted 26 double-figure scoring outings, including 13 20-plus point performances this season.

Senior guard Patti Larson (Kalkaska) received the program’s Hardest Worker Award. The team co-captain returned from a medical redshirt season to play in 25 games this campaign. She concluded her FSU career with 124 points, 134 rebounds, 66 assists and 50 steals in 103 career contests. The 5-9 Larson, who was named FSU’s 2000-01 Defensive Most Valuable Player, scored 18 points and had 26 rebounds in her final season.

The Defensive MVP Award was presented to junior forward Stephanie Benear (Howell), who scored 119 points and grabbed 79 rebounds in 26 appearances this season. The 5-9 Benear started 25 contests and was the team’s leader in field goal percentage (.529; 54-102) along with placing third in assists (51). Sophomore forward Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central), a team co-captain, received the team’s Sixth Player Award. She attained personal career-bests in points (153), rebounds (123) and assists (32) this season while notching four double-figure scoring performances in 26 contests. The 5-10 Potvin also ranked second in rebounding (4.6 rpg), fourth in steals (29) and fourth in field goal percentage (.451: 60-133) among Ferris’ 2002-03 leaders.

Freshman forward/center Darcie Philp (Ubly) garnered team Most Improved Player Award accolades as a result of scoring 78 points and grabbing 50 rebounds in 25 outings. The 6-1 Philp registered 54 points in her final 14 contests, including two double-digit scoring efforts. She recorded a personal career-high 14 points with a .667 (6-9) shooting percentage in Ferris’ league triumph at Saginaw Valley State (1/23).

Freshman guard Erin Miller (Niles) was the recipient of FSU’s Rookie of the Year Award after ranking as the team’s third-leading scorer (12.5 ppg). Miller, who was named the GLIAC’s 2002-03 Freshman of the Year, posted 17 double-figure scoring performances this campaign and concluded the season ranked second among Ferris' assists leaders (3.2 apg). The 5-7 Miller scored 10 points or more in eight of her last 11 outings and compiled four 20-plus point contests while starting all 26 games during the 2002-03 campaign. Miller, who registered the program's 11th-best single-season steals mark (57), ranked tied for second place among NCAA-II's single-game leaders in three point field goal percentage (.857) after sinking six-of-seven treys at Saint Joseph's, Ind. (12/15).

FSU, which finished the year 15-11 overall and 10-8 in league action, reached the GLIAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and posted its seventh straight 10-win campaign during the 2002-03 season under fifth-year head coach Tracey Fisk.
