FERRIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PROGRAM INKS TEGHAN THELEN
Pewamo-Westphalia High School Standout Signs National Letter-of-Intent With Bulldogs
The Ferris State University women's basketball team has bolstered its backcourt with the addition of prep guard Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia), who signed a national letter-of-intent this fall signing period to compete for the Bulldogs beginning with the 2005-06 academic year. The announcement was made by seventh-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk.
The 5-6 Thelen averaged 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists per game while guiding Pewamo-Westphalia High School to its third 20-win campaign in the last four years during the fall 2004 season. Thelen, who attained both first-team 2004 Detroit News and Detroit Free Press Class C All-State kudos, added 40 three-point field goals and shot 50 percent from the field in her final campaign under head coach Dan Miller. The three-time (2002-04) All-Central Michigan Athletic Conference honoree led the Pirates to a conference title and a regional finals appearance as a senior.
“Teghan's a kid whose ultimate desire is to win championships,” Fisk said. “She’s a fierce competitor and is willing to sacrifice anything to make the team successful as is evident by her high school statistics and record.”
Thelen, who claimed Lansing State Journal All-Area accolades for the second consecutive season in 2004, tallied 14 points along with seven assists and six rebounds per game as a junior. A 2004 Michigan Miss Basketball candidate, Thelen was a two-time (2003-04) team Most Valuable Player Award recipient and compiled over 1,000 career points.
“Her mid-range game is outstanding and she also pushes the ball up the floor extremely well,” said Fisk. “Defensively, Teghan plays tenacious on the ball defense and is a strong rebounder, especially for her size.”
A team captain, Thelen earned team Most Improved Player Award recognition as a freshman (2001). She helped the Pirates win a regional championship and advance to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Class C Final Four in 2002 by scoring 12 points and dishing out five assists per contest. Thelen, who won four Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) state titles, also participated in volleyball and softball at PWHS.
The daughter of Tom and Kim Thelen, Teghan remains undecided on an academic major. She represents the initial member of FSU's 2005-06 recruiting class.
The Bulldogs, who reached the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second time in school history last season, are presently 2-4 overall and 2-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play entering this Saturday's (Dec. 18) 6 p.m. (EST) non-league road contest versus North Dakota at UND's Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
