The Ferris State University women's basketball program has signed Caitlin Hutchison (Riverview) to a national letter-of-intent to attend and play basketball at FSU, starting with the 2005-06 season. The announcement was made by the Bulldogs' seventh-year head coach Tracey Fisk.
A 5-11 guard/forward, Hutchison tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds per outing in 2004 for Riverview High School, which claimed its third consecutive district championship with an 18-5 overall record. The third-team 2004 Detroit News and Detroit Free Press Class B All-State selection also received first-team All-Huron League accolades for the third time (2002-04) after leading RHS in rebounding for the second-straight season.
“Caitlin’s a versatile player and a capable scorer,” said Fisk. “She always found a way to help her team win games at the high school level.”
A 2004 Huron League All-Academic Team member, Hutchison earned team Most Valuable Player recognition and claimed the squad’s Playmaker Award as a senior team captain. She totaled 13.2 points and 7.6 rebounds in 2003 as the Pirates advanced to the regional finals while posting a school-record 21-4 overall record under head coach Matt Godfrey.
“In addition to being a solid shooter, Caitlin also has a nose for the ball,” Fisk said. “She finishes well around the basket and does a good job rebounding. Caitlin does so many little things that never show up on the statistics sheet.
“She will be a consistent contributor to our program.”
Besides basketball, Hutchison participated in volleyball and soccer as a prepster. She has also been active in the National Honor Society, Student Council, Spanish Club and Key Club at Riverview.
The daughter of John and Cynthia Hutchison, Caitlin plans to major in history at Ferris State. She joins Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) as members of FSU’s 2005-06 recruiting class.
Ferris State will visit North Dakota Saturday (Dec. 18) for a 6 p.m. (EST) non-conference contest at Grand Forks, N.D. The Bulldogs, who are presently 2-4 overall and 2-2 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action this campaign, advanced to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for only the second time in school history last season.
