Ferris State Earns Three First-Place Votes In League Balloting

The Ferris State University women's basketball team was picked to finish second in the 2004-05 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Basketball Coaches Preseason North Division Poll, which was released Wednesday (Nov. 10) by the league office.

The Bulldogs totaled 32 points and three first-place votes in the balloting, which was conducted by the conference's head coaches. A year ago, Ferris State took fourth place in the conference's preseason coaches poll with 26 points.

Defending champion Lake Superior State was selected as the North Division favorite as the Lakers recorded 33 points along with four first-place votes to edge FSU by a single point. Ashland took the top spot in the South Division with 24 points and four first-place votes.

The league's 13 head coaches voted for the division in which they play, but were not allowed to vote for their own team. The first-place team in the North Division ballot received six points while the second-place team received five points, etc. In the South Division, the first-place team was granted five points while the second-place team took four points, etc.

The FSU women’s basketball team registered a 21-10 overall record and a second-place 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark while reaching the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second time in school history a year ago. The 2003-04 campaign marked the eighth consecutive year the Bulldogs had won 10 or more games and their second 20-win campaign in the last five seasons. Ferris welcomes back three starters and eight letterwinners from last season.

FSU will open its 31st season of varsity competition Tuesday, Nov. 16, by hosting Lewis (Ill.) in FSU's Jim Wink Arena at Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff for the non-league encounter is 6 p.m. (EST).
