FERRIS STATE SIGNS ROGERS CITY HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCT

Ashley Fleming To Continue Women’s Basketball Career With The Bulldogs

The Ferris State University women's basketball program has received a commitment from prep forward/center Ashley Fleming (Posen/Rogers City), who has announced her intentions to attend and compete in basketball at FSU, starting with the 2005-06 academic term. The announcement was made by seventh-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk.

Ashley FlemingThe 6-0 Fleming netted 22 points and 18 rebounds per game for Rogers City High School as a senior during the 2004 campaign. The three-time (2002-04) All-Straits Area Conference First Team honoree led the Hurons to a 12-8 overall mark in her final campaign under prep coach Karl Grambau.

“Ashley's a phenomenal all-around athlete,” said Fisk, who was named the 2003-04 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Coach of the Year. “She is eager to play college basketball and will be a perfect fit in our program.”

A four-year (2001-04) letterwinner, Fleming garnered second-team 2004 Detroit News Class C All-State laurels along with Detroit Free Press Sixth Team Class C All-State kudos after being chosen as the recipient of the league’s Player of the Year Award. Fleming concluded her career as Rogers City's all-time leading scorer, rebounder and shot blocker. She was chosen as RCHS’ team Most Valuable Player Award winner three consecutive seasons (2002-04).

The three-time (2002-04) Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) All-Stater totaled 23.6 points and 15 rebounds per outing as a junior (2003) after averaging 20 points and 13 rebounds in her sophomore campaign (2002). She helped the Hurons post a school-record 20-4 overall record as a freshman in 2001 by scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds per game.

“Ashley loves to compete and is a proven winner in all sports,” Fisk said. “She's an agile post player who anticipates well and has long arms, which will be a boost for us in our full court press and in the half-court setting.”

Fleming also competed in volleyball and softball at Rogers City while earning all-state honors on the diamond last season after guiding the Hurons to a state runner-up finish. She was a two-year member of the school’s National Honor Society.

Fleming, who’s the daughter of Neil and Jeanette Fleming, remains undecided on an academic major. She joins Teghan Thelen (Pewamo/Westphalia) and Caitlin Hutchison (Riverview) as FSU’s 2005-06 women’s basketball recruits to date.

The Bulldogs, who concluded the 2003-04 campaign with a 21-10 overall record, reached the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second time in school history last season. FSU is presently 2-4 overall and 2-2 in GLIAC play this campaign entering Saturday's (Dec. 18) 6 p.m. (EST) non-league road contest versus North Dakota at Grand Forks, N.D.
