FERRIS STATE ADDS SAULT STE. MARIE’S ASHLEY CORBIERE

Versatile Guard/Forward Joins Program For 2004-05 Campaign

Seventh-year Ferris State University women’s basketball head coach Tracey Fisk has announced the addition of prep forward Ashley Corbiere (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area), who has committed to attend and play basketball at FSU beginning with the 2004-05 academic year.

The 5-10 Corbiere averaged 13 points, nine rebounds and seven assists per game for Sault Area High School during the 2003 campaign. The two-time (2002-03) All-Big North Conference honoree twice received All-Upper Peninsula accolades.

“Ashley’s a hard-working individual who’s determined to make an impact,” Fisk said. “She’s a tough competitor who’s played for one of the top teams in the Upper Peninsula.

“In addition, she’s optimistic and fits in well with our team,” added Fisk.

A two-time (2002-03) team Most Valuable Player Award winner, Corbiere served as the Blue Devils’ team captain as a senior under head coach Heather Kronemeyer. She attained the squad’s Best Defensive Player Award in 2001 after helping guide SAHS to both a conference and regional championship in her freshman (2000) season. She was a prep teammate of current Bulldog senior forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area) and is the younger sister of former FSU women’s basketball/track and field athlete Lisa Corbiere (1992-95).

Besides basketball, Corbiere participated in volleyball along with track and field. She totaled eight varsity athletics letters during her prep career. Corbiere led the Blue Devils’ volleyball team to a 25-21 overall record and a district title in 2003-04 while garnering team MVP Award kudos. She played Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) basketball for the Straits Area Shooters.

Academically, Corbiere was active in the school’s Business Professional of America chapter, Junior Rotarian organization and yearbook staff along with being a National Honor Society member.

The daughter of Donald and Karen Corbiere, Ashley plans to major in recreation management at Ferris State. She joins Rachel Folcik (Powers/Carney-Nadeau), Samantha Johns (Allendale), Katie Loosvelt (Trenton/Carlson) and Lindsey Deyo (Battle Creek/Gull Lake) as members of FSU’s 2004-05 women’s basketball recruiting class.

The Bulldogs, who concluded the 2003-04 campaign with a 21-10 overall record, compiled a second-place 14-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division mark and reached the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament for the second time in school history last season. The 2003-04 campaign also marked the eighth consecutive year in which the Bulldogs have won 10 or more games and registered their second 20-win campaign in the last five seasons.

Ferris State is tentatively slated to tip off its 31st varsity campaign Sunday, Oct. 24, by hosting the Athletics In Action in a 2 p.m. (EDT) exhibition contest at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs will then battle NCAA-Division I member Central Michigan in exhibition action Thursday, Nov. 11, beginning at 7 p.m. (EST) in CMU’s Rose Arena at Mount Pleasant, Mich. FSU’s first official game this campaign is set for Tuesday, Nov. 16, versus Lewis (Ill.) in a 6 p.m. (EST) non-conference home contest.
