FSU Women’s Basketball At A Glance: The Ferris State University women’s basketball team will host Northern Michigan this Thursday (Feb. 26) in a 6 p.m. (EST) Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) encounter at FSU’s Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Ferris will then conclude the regular season at home versus Michigan Tech Saturday (Feb. 28). Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. (EST).
Ticket Information: Individual game tickets to all FSU regular-season home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog Athletics Ticket Office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $7 and student tickets are $5. A family pass can be purchased for $15. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $5. FSU students are admitted free of charge by showing their student identification card.
Ferris In Second: FSU is presently 18-7 overall and holds a second-place 13-3 mark behind Lake Superior State (14-2) in the GLIAC’s North Division. The Bulldogs have won 10 of their last 12 games to date this season and are currently ranked third in the latest (Feb. 17) NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Rankings.
FSU Earns Home Game: Ferris will host its first-ever GLIAC Women’s Basketball Tournament home game Tuesday, March 2. The Bulldogs will face an opponent to be determined by this week’s results in quarterfinal round action. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (EST) prior to the FSU men’s quarterfinal round contest. The semifinals and finals will be held Friday and Saturday, March 5-6, at the site of the highest remaining seed.
A Look At Last Week: Ferris beat rival Grand Valley State 72-66 in last Monday’s (Feb. 16) league tilt at Allendale, Mich. The Bulldogs then posted a 64-55 GLIAC triumph over Northwood Saturday (Feb. 21) in Midland, Mich.
Sparking The Bulldogs: Senior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) totaled 23 points, sophomore guard Erin Miller (Niles) and senior forward/center Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central) both contributed 15 points while freshman guard Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing) notched 14 points at GVSU. Miller tallied a game-high 19 points, DeMartin scored 11 points and Reinhart added 10 points at Northwood.
The Bulldog Tradition: The Ferris State women’s basketball program, which is midst its 30th anniversary campaign, has compiled a 356-383 (.482) all-time mark. The Bulldogs won the GLIAC North Division crown, advanced to the NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament and recorded the nation’s highest grade point average in 1999-2000. FSU, which also claimed GLIAC Tournament runner-up honors in 1999-00, has ranked among the nation’s top 25 academic teams four consecutive seasons.
Last Season: Ferris State concluded the 2002-03 campaign with a 15-11 overall mark, which included a fourth-place (tie) 10-8 GLIAC North Division finish. FSU dropped a 98-65 decision (3/1/03) at Lake Superior State in the quarterfinal round of the GLIAC Tournament.
Head Coach Tracey Fisk: Sixth-year FSU head coach Tracey Fisk presently ranks as Ferris’ all-time winningest coach with a current 103-58 (.640) career record at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA-II Great Lakes Regional Tournament appearance during the 1999-00 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98). Fisk recorded her 100th career coaching victory at Michigan Tech (Feb. 5).
Senior Day: Ferris will honor seniors Lucy DeMartin, Molly Potvin and Stephanie Benear (Howell) between Saturday’s women’s and men’s games as part of its annual Senior Day activities. Benear, who has missed the last four games due to an ankle injury and remains questionable, has registered 414 career points in 99 games (4.2 ppg). DeMartin has scored 1,591 points in 104 outings (15.3 ppg) to date while Potvin has tallied 529 points in 81 appearances (6.5 ppg).
No Place Like Home: Ferris has recorded a 38-12 (.760) overall record to date in home contests at Jim Wink Arena, including a 31-11 (.738) mark in league play. The 2,400-seat facility replaced the Old Jim Wink Arena, which was converted into the current Student Recreation Center after the 1997-98 campaign. FSU won its first 14 games in the facility.

Between The Lines: “Between The Lines”, a weekly television program profiling Ferris State University Athletics, airs across northern Michigan on WFQX-Fox 33 every Saturday at 3:30 p.m. (ET). The 30-minute program is hosted by Phill Mooney and produced in the studios of the University’s cable Channel 7. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk will make appearances throughout the season. The show is also aired locally on the University's cable Channel 7 every Tuesday (7 p.m.) and Wednesday (8 p.m.).
Preseason All-America: Ferris’ Lucy DeMartin was named to the 2003-04 Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason Super 16 All-America Team. DeMartin, a 2002-03 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Great Lakes Region First-Team selection, was also chosen as the publication’s preseason GLIAC Player of the Year. Her team-leading 20.2 points per game scoring average last season ranked first among the school’s all-time leaders and placed second in the GLIAC’s overall statistical rankings.
Top Of The List: FSU’s Lucy DeMartin became the school’s all-time scoring leader by surpassing Monta Ware (1,573; 1979-83) for first place on the Bulldogs’ all-time scoring list versus GVSU. DeMartin has presently compiled 1,591 career points and has an active 56-game double-figure scoring streak.
Bulldog Bites: Stephanie Benear needs 13 rebounds to garner her 300th career board ....... Ferris has won 11 of its last 13 games decided by five points or less dating back to last season ............ Molly Potvin has reached double-figure scoring in 14 of her last 18 outings to date .......... Kristin Reinhart tallied a personal career-high eight rebounds at Grand Valley State ....... FSU's win at Northwood was the school's 17th consecutive series' victory against the Timberwolves. NU has not defeated the Bulldogs since recording a 78-74 home win Feb. 25, 1995. Ferris head coach Tracey Fisk currently holds a 12-0 career coaching mark against Northwood ....... The 2003-04 campaign marks the eighth consecutive campaign the Bulldogs have won 10 or more games. FSU has currently won 10 or more conference games each of the last seven seasons to date .......... FSU has posted a 3-5 (.375) mark to date in five previous GLIAC Tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 1999-00. Ferris will be making its fifth consecutive tourney berth this campaign, including its sixth appearance in the last seven seasons.
FSU Picked Third: Ferris was picked to finish third in the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs totaled 26 points and one first-place vote in the balloting by the GLIAC’s head coaches. Grand Valley State was selected as the GLIAC North Division favorite while Wayne State took the South Division’s top spot.
Verizon Academic Honors: Lucy DeMartin was named to the first-team 2003-04 Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women’s Basketball Team, which was announced last Thursday (Feb. 19). DeMartin, who is now eligible to receive Academic All-America consideration, previously attained first-team honors last season and was a second-team pick in 2001-02. Erin Miller received third-team all-district recognition this campaign.
A Look At The Opponents:
Northern Michigan: NMU holds a 36-13 series advantage and has won five of the last six meetings heading into this Thursday’s 50th encounter. FSU head coach Tracey Fisk currently has a 3-9 career coaching mark against Northern Michigan and dropped a 78-71 decision in the last meeting (2/8/04) between the two teams at Marquette, Mich. NMU, which is directed by 15th-year head coach Mike Geary, presently is 18-6 overall and 10-6 in the GLIAC after last Saturday’s (Feb. 21) 66-64 league home loss to Lake Superior State. The Wildcats, who have won four of their last five outings to date, compiled a 16-10 overall record in 2002-03 and placed third (12-6) in the GLIAC’s North Division. NMU, which was picked to finish second in the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll, is led in scoring by junior guard Tiffany Grubaugh (19.5 ppg). Senior guard Emily Samuelson of Reed City, Mich., is averaging 15.3 points per game for the Wildcats.
Michigan Tech: The Huskies maintain a 29-18 lead and have won five of the last seven series’ encounters entering this Saturday’s 48th meeting. However, FSU beat MTU 75-65 in the last meeting (2/5/04) held at Houghton, Mich. MTU is presently 14-10 overall and 9-7 in the GLIAC heading into this Thursday’s (Feb. 26) league game at Grand Valley State following last Saturday’s (Feb. 21) 92-55 conference home win over Saginaw Valley State. Fisk presently has a 3-8 career coaching record against the Huskies, who have won three of their last five games to date. Michigan Tech, which is led in scoring by senior forward Andrea Novak (19.1 ppg), was chosen fifth in the 2003-04 GLIAC North Division Preseason Coaches Poll. The Huskies, who are guided by first-year head coach John Barnes, were 15-13 overall during the 2002-03 campaign and compiled a fourth-place tying 10-8 GLIAC North Division record.
