FERRIS STATE ADDS LUCIE CENKOVA TO RECRUITING CLASS
Junior College Transfer Joins FSU Women’s Basketball Program
Sixth-year Ferris State University women’s basketball head coach Tracey Fisk has announced the addition of junior college transfer Lucie Cenkova (Prague, Czech Republic/Illinois Central), who has committed to attend FSU and play basketball beginning with the 2003-04 academic year.
Cenkova, a 5-10 guard, shot 46.5 percent from the floor and dished out 34 assists during the 2002-03 campaign as Illinois Central College won the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Championship with an 80-67 triumph over Mitchell (Conn.) in the finals (March 22) at Hagerstown, Md. The Cougars finished the year with a 33-3 overall record and their fifth national title in the last 11 years under head coach Lorene Ramsey.
“Lucie is an extremely talented player who’s in phenomenal shape,” Fisk said. “She is accustomed to winning and has a great work ethic, which will benefit our program.”
A native of the Czech Republic, Cenkova played two seasons at ICC following her graduation from Prague’s Gymnasium Pripotocni School in 2001. Illinois Central finished 32-3 overall, won a regional championship and took third place at the national tournament in Cenkova’s initial season (2001-02).
“Lucie has a nice outside touch and can create her own shot off the dribble,” said Fisk. “She’s also athletic and plays solid position defense.”
Cenkova, who attained all-star recognition and served as team captain for Gymnasium Pripotocni in 2001, averaged 16 points and four rebounds per game in her final prep campaign. During the 2000 season, Cenkova led her squad to a national championship under head coach Martina Balastikova while garnering conference and state Most Valuable Player Award honors.
Cenkova, who was drafted by a professional women’s team in the Czech Republic, also played junior national basketball for the Czech Republic’s Second Team and helped lead her city squad to a national title in 2001.
The daughter of Tomas Cenek and Alena Cenkova, Lucie joins guard Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing), guard/forward Hailey Potter (Temperance/Ida) and forward Audrey Thwing (Davison) as FSU’s 2003-04 women’s basketball signees to date. She plans to major in applied biology at Ferris State.
Ferris State, which finished the year 15-11 overall and 10-8 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action, reached the GLIAC Tournament for the fourth consecutive year and posted its seventh straight 10-win campaign during the 2002-03 season.
