2003-04 FERRIS STATE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AWARDS PRESENTED
Senior Lucy DeMartin & Sophomore Erin Miller Named Co-MVP Award Winners

Senior guard Lucy DeMartin (Mason) and sophomore guard Erin Miller (Niles) were honored as the Ferris State University women’s basketball team’s 2003-04 Co-Most Valuable Player Award recipients for leading the Bulldogs to their second-ever NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament this campaign. The awards were presented at the program’s annual postseason banquet held Sunday (April 25) at FSU’s Wheeler Pavilion in Big Rapids, Mich.
DeMartin, who attained both first-team 2003-04 Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region and All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division honors, concluded her career as the school's all-time scoring leader with 1,721 points. She posted a school single-season record 567 points this season and received first-team 2003-04 Verizon Academic All-America College Division along with Division II Women’s Basketball Bulletin Honorable Mention All-America kudos. The 5-9 DeMartin, who ranked as FSU's leading scorer (18.3 ppg) this season, finished her career as the school's leader with 402 career made free throws and is listed among Ferris' all-time top 10 performers in field goals (605), steals (198), assists (356), rebounds (415), blocked shots (35), three-point field goals (109), three-point field goal percentage (.344) and free throw percentage (.778). DeMartin, who earned GLIAC All-Academic Team laurels for the third-straight season, previously received FSU’s 2002-03 MVP Award after posting a school single-season record 20.2 points per game scoring average as a junior.
Miller, who was named FSU’s 2002-03 Rookie of the Year Award winner, reached double-figure scoring in 28 of her 31 contests this campaign and ranked as the Bulldogs' second-leading scorer (17.0 ppg). The 5-7 Miller was the recipient of the GLIAC’s 2002-03 Freshman of the Year Award after being the team’s third-highest scorer (12.5 ppg) in her initial season. Miller, who garnered both Verizon Academic All-District IV Third Team and GLIAC All-Academic Team recognition this year, attained GLIAC North Division Player of the Week accolades twice (Jan. 5 & Feb. 9) this campaign. She also earned first-team All-GLIAC North Division and second-team Daktronics All-Great Lakes Region honors this season. Both Miller and DeMartin were Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Great Lakes Region First-Team selections and among 40 national finalists for the NCAA Division II Kodak/WBCA All-America Team.
The squad’s Sixth Player and Most Improved Player Awards were both presented to senior forward/center Molly Potvin (Lansing/Catholic Central). The 5-10 Potvin posted personal career-highs in points (340), rebounds (213), assists (66) and steals (47) during the 2003-04 campaign. Potvin, who received the Sixth Player Award for the second consecutive year, placed 10th this campaign among the GLIAC’s leaders in rebounding (6.9 rpg), 16th in field goal percentage (.502) and 30th in scoring (11.0 ppg). The two-time (2003-04) GLIAC All-Academic Team member tallied 21 double-figure scoring performances and posted five double-double (points and rebounds) outings this season en route to receiving Ferris State Athletics’ Helen Bennett Award (outstanding female student-athlete). She concluded her career tied for ninth in field goal percentage (.469; 229-488) and 11th in blocked shots (26) on FSU’s all-time leaders list. The two-time (2002-04) team captain netted 595 points, 398 rebounds and 114 assists in 87 career appearances.
Senior guard Stephanie Benear (Howell) claimed the team’s Hardest Worker Award. The three-time (2002-04) GLIAC All-Academic Team honoree notched personal career-bests in points (171) and rebounds (98) this season while starting 25 contests. Benear, who was a team captain this campaign, concluded her career tied for ninth in field goal percentage (.469; 173-369) at Ferris State. She tallied 425 points, 302 rebounds, 143 assists and 74 steals in 103 career outings. The Defensive MVP Award was given to junior forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie), who had her most productive season this campaign as evidenced by personal career-highs in points (233), rebounds (116) and assists (33). The 2003-04 GLIAC All-Defensive and All-Academic Team pick was the squad’s fourth-leading rebounder (3.7 rpg) and placed fifth in scoring (7.5 ppg). She compiled nine double-digit scoring efforts in 2003-04.
Freshman guard Kristin Reinhart (East Lansing) garnered Rookie of the Year Award accolades after recording 265 points, 106 rebounds and 73 assists in her initial campaign. She scored 10 points or more in 13 outings, including six of her final eight appearances this season. Reinhart ranked third in assists (2.4 apg), third in made three-point field goals (21) and fourth in scoring (8.5 ppg) among FSU’s 2003-04 leaders.
The Bulldogs, who concluded the year with a 21-10 overall record, compiled a second-place 14-4 GLIAC North Division mark this campaign and finished second in the league's 2003-04 postseason tournament. The 2003-04 campaign, which was the program’s 30th anniversary season, marks the eighth consecutive year the Bulldogs have won 10 or more games and their second 20-win campaign in the last five seasons.
