Bulldogs Set to Open GLIAC Play

FSU Basketball at a Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action this Thursday (Nov. 29) against the University of Findlay Oilers in Findlay, Ohio. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. (EST). The Bulldogs enter the contest with a 1-1 overall mark. Findlay is 3-0 overall and was picked to finish third in the GLIAC's 2001-02 Women's Basketball South Division Coaches Poll.
Last Week - Ferris State did not play last week after registering a 1-1 overall mark at the Chatham Orthopaedics Tipoff Classic the previous weekend (Nov. 16-17) at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga. The Bulldogs lost their 29th season opener (Nov. 16) versus Presbyterian College (S.C.) 65-60. FSU bounced back to beat tournament host Armstrong Atlantic State 76-65 in the consolation contest (Nov. 17). FSU had never faced either Presbyterian or Armstrong Atlantic State prior to the tournament.
Horwitz Garners Tourney Honors - Sophomore forward Bridget Horwitz was named to the Chatham Orthopaedics Tipoff Classic All-Tournament team as she registered two double-double (points and rebounds) performances. Horwitz scored a career-high 18 points and tallied a personal-best 14 rebounds to notch her first career double-double in the loss against Presbyterian. She added 14 points and 14 rebounds as FSU posted its first victory of the season versus Armstrong Atlantic State. Besides registering her first career double-double, the 6-2 Horwitz also totaled her 200th career point and grabbed her 100th career rebound against Presbyterian. After two games, Horwitz is FSU's scoring (16.0 points per game) and rebounding (14.0 rebounds per game) leader. She has 20 career blocks and needs two more to move into a tie for 10th place on the all-time FSU chart.
Killips Keeps Climbing - Senior point guard Debbie Killips has 236 career steals and is 17 thefts away from becoming FSU's all-time career steals leader. A 2000-01 GLIAC North Division All-Defensive Team selection, Killips trails only former Bulldog player Valerie Scott (1994-97), who registered 253 career steals. The 5-7 Killips has 303 career assists and needs eight more to move into fifth place on the school chart. A 2001-02 FSU team captain, Killips is 37 points away from scoring her 700th career point. She currently has 663 career points in 87 career outings (7.7 points per game).
FSU Falls In Season Opener - Ferris State fell to 11-17 all-time in season-opening games with the loss to Presbyterian. Under head coach Tracey Fisk, the Bulldogs are 2-2 in opening day contests. Prior to the loss against the Blue Hose, FSU had won four of its previous six season-opening games. Presbyterian posted its fourth-straight 20-win campaign (22-8) last season and finished tied for second place in the South Atlantic Conference. PC has reached the NCAA Division II Tournament five times in the last eight seasons.
Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 57-29 (.663) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 2000-01 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).
Bulldog Bites - Seniors Debbie Killips and Patti Larson have been elected FSU's 2001-02 team captains ........... Larson suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during preseason practice and is out for the year .............. FSU was picked to finish fourth in the 2001-02 GLIAC Preseason Women's Basketball North Division Coaches Poll ............. Sophomore Lucy DeMartin currently has 279 career points and is 21 points away from scoring her 300th career point ............ FSU recorded its first win of the year at the expense of Armstrong Atlantic State Assistant Coach Andy Bloodworth, who is head coach Tracey Fisk's sister and a former Bulldog volunteer assistant coach (1998-99) .............. Eight letterwinners are back from last year's 16-11 squad ........... The 2001-02 FSU roster includes five newcomers and six sophomores ............... Killips sank two three-point baskets versus Presbyterian to move into eighth place on the school career three-point basket chart. She currently has 61 made three-pointers and needs a single trey to move into a tie for seventh place with Amy Popielarz (1999-00) on the school chart.
Big Days for Several Bulldogs - While Bridget Horwitz was the lone FSU player named to the Chatham Orthopaedics Tipoff Classic All-Tournament Team, several other Bulldog players also performed well. Junior forward Jennifer Brogger tied a personal-high with 17 points in the win over Armstrong Atlantic State and sank two three-point baskets. Brogger is 11th on FSU's all-time career three-point field goal chart with 52 made treys and needs seven more to tie Ann Reinstra (1986-89) for 10th place. Sophomore Stephanie Benear scored a career-high 10 points in her first career start versus Presbyterian while sophomore Molly Potvin registered a personal-best 15 points against Armstrong Atlantic State. Sophomore guard Lindsey Kohn tied a career-high with three points versus AASU.
Against Findlay - Ferris State and Findlay will square off for the fifth time this Thursday night. Findlay holds a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series and won the first three series meetings. FSU recorded its only series win last season (Nov. 30, 2000) in overtime (87-80) at Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs have not won at Findlay in two previous appearances.
Ticket Prices - Individual game tickets to all FSU home basketball games can be obtained at the door or by calling the Bulldog ticket office at (231) 591-2888. Adult tickets are $5 and student tickets are $3. A family pass can be purchased for $10. Ferris State faculty/staff ticket prices are $4. Special group pricing is available for groups of 20 or more.
Next Week - Ferris State will host Gannon University and Mercyhurst College in GLIAC action at Jim Wink Arena. Thursday night's (Dec. 6) contest versus Gannon is at 6 p.m. (EST) while Saturday's (Dec. 8) game against Mercyhurst tips off at 1 p.m. (EST).
