Fourth-year Ferris State University women’s basketball head coach Tracey Fisk has announced the addition of prep basketball player Erin Miller (Niles), who has committed to attend and play basketball at FSU beginning with the 2002-03 academic year.

“Erin is an extremely sound defensive player and anticipates well,” Fisk said. “She’s also a solid outside shooter and has the ability to drive to the basket.”

A 5-7 guard, Miller averaged 17.8 points, 6.1 rebounds and 6.8 steals per game as a senior while leading Niles High School to a 22-2 overall mark and the school’s fourth consecutive regional championship game appearance. A fourth-team 2001 Detroit Free Press Class B All-State honoree, Miller received 2001 Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Academic All-State honors and the 2001 Niles Daily Star Player-of-the-Year Award.

“Erin is an unselfish player, who’s capable of putting up big numbers when given the opportunity,” Fisk said. “She does a good job of passing the ball into the post which should help our inside game. Erin’s agility will be an asset on both ends of the floor.”

A two-time (2000-01) first-team All-Southwestern Michigan Athletic Conference pick, Miller tallied 15.4 points and 5.6 rebounds per game as a junior. She led the Vikings to three conference championships, four district titles and one regional crown during her four-year prep career under head coach Jim Arnold. The 2001 Fruitbelt Officials Association Sportsmanship Award winner served as Niles’ team captain twice (2000-01) and holds the school’s single-game steals record with 14 total.

In addition to being a standout basketball player, Miller earned 2001-02 Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaches Association Class B Honorable Mention All-State accolades and was a two-time state track and field qualifier. She currently is the school’s pole vault record (7-9) holder and also attained all-district soccer recognition in her junior campaign.

Besides athletics, Miller was involved in the school’s French Club, Matt Club and the National Honor Society. The school’s class valedictorian, she has also been the “N” Club President and treasurer of Niles’ Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) marketing association.

The daughter of Edward and Kim Miller, Erin plans to major in finance at Ferris State and joins Mary Brown (Benton Harbor/Lake Michigan Catholic), Kara Gallert (Wyoming/Park), Kelly McLaughlin (Clare) and Darcie Philp (Ubly) as 2002-03 FSU women’s basketball recruits. Her mother, a 1974 FSU graduate, worked as a Ferris Admissions Officer at the school’s satellite location in Niles until her retirement in April 2002.

Ferris State finished the 2001-02 season with a 14-12 overall mark. The Bulldogs placed fourth in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s (GLIAC) North Division with an 11-7 record and reached the GLIAC Tournament for the third consecutive campaign.
