Jan. 22: FSU Wins Two Weekend Games; Killips Cops GLIAC Award

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will face the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals this Thursday (Jan. 24) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. (EST). FSU will then host the Lake Superior State University Lakers this Saturday (Jan. 26) at 1 p.m. (EST).

Last Week - Ferris State defeated the Northwood University Timberwolves 65-53 last Thursday (Jan. 17) at NU's Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Mich. FSU pulled out an 80-74 victory versus the Grand Valley State University Lakers last Saturday (Jan. 19) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs are currently 10-5 overall and 6-2 in conference action. Ferris ranks 116th of 1,309 institutions (all levels) represented in the latest (Jan. 14) Dunkel Sports Research Index Women's Basketball Ratings. The Bulldogs are seventh in the current (Jan. 8) NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional rankings. FSU has presently won six of its past eight games.

Killips Earns GLIAC Award - Senior guard Debbie Killips has been named the GLIAC North Division Player of the Week (Jan. 21) for her performance last week. Killips registered a game-high 18 points and had five assists at Northwood. She added 22 points, seven assists and five steals against GVSU.

A second-team 2000-01 GLIAC North Division pick, Killips is presently FSU's leading scorer (15.9 points per game) and the school's career steals leader (288). She currently ranks third on Ferris' career assists list (374) and needs 117 more to tie current second-place holder Jodi Raab (491; 1989-93).

The 5-7 Killips presently has 879 career points and is 47 points away from Tianna Kirkland (926; 1997-01), who ranks 10th on the all-time FSU chart. Killips has made 87 career three-point field goals to date and needs one more to tie Jen Newsone (88; 1998-00) for fifth place on the school's all-time list.

Brogger Registers 500th Point - Junior forward Jennifer Brogger tallied her 500th career point against the Lakers and currently has scored 501 career points. Brogger also grabbed her 200th career rebound versus Grand Valley State and presently has 205 career rebounds. She has attained double-figure scoring in seven of the last eight games and has 11 double-figure scoring performances this campaign. The 5-9 Brogger has made 73 career three-point field goals to date and ranks sixth on the all-time FSU list. She currently ranks ninth on FSU's career three-point field goal percentage chart (.338; 73-216).

Horwitz Has Streak End - Sophomore center Bridget Horwitz had her nine-game double-figure scoring streak end at Northwood as she totaled nine points. Horwitz has tallied 10 points or more in 12 of 15 games this season. She presently has 34 career blocks and needs three more to tie Danielle Smith (37; 1988-91) for sixth place on the all-time FSU chart. Horwitz registered her 200th career rebound at Northwood and has 212 career rebounds to date. She scored her 400th career point against Grand Valley State and currently has 406 career points.

Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 66-33 (.667) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1999-2000 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

Bulldog Bites - Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin currently ranks third (.818; 112-137) on Ferris' career free throw percentage chart ........ FSU's top four season-scoring leaders (Debbie Killips, Bridget Horwitz, Jennifer Brogger and DeMartin) have accounted for 77% (849-1,100) of the squad's total points this season .............. Killips has been FSU's assists leader nine of the last 10 games. She has registered 10 double-figure scoring games this campaign ........ Sophomore guard Michelle Welch currently has 74 career points and is 26 points shy of notching her 100th career point ............ Killips presently ranks 10th in career field goal percentage (.460; 319-693), third in career three-point field goal percentage (.370; 87-235) and seventh in career free throw percentage (.778; 154-198) at Ferris State ......... Brogger ranks second (.825; 104-126) in Ferris' career free throw percentage list ....... Horwitz is presently fifth (.494; 170-344) on the school's career field goal percentage chart. Her current 17 blocks this year presently rank 10th on FSU's single-season list .......... Junior center Ann Platz had a career-high nine rebounds versus Grand Valley State ........... FSU head coach Tracey Fisk needs six more wins to tie Lori Hyman (72-86; 1989-95) for second place on the school's career victory list ......... FSU has won five of its past seven meetings against Grand Valley State to date ............ Sophomore forward Stephanie Benear currently has 99 career rebounds and needs one more to notch her 100th career rebound.

Against Saginaw Valley State - FSU and Saginaw Valley State will square off for the 55th time this Thursday at FSU's Jim Wink Arena. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 38-16. However, FSU has won the last five series' contests, including the last meeting (Feb. 17, 2001) when Ferris posted a 68-55 home victory. Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current 5-1 career coaching mark versus Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals are 8-8 overall and 2-6 in GLIAC action heading into this Thursday's contest. SVSU is coached by Kim Chandler, who's in her first season at the helm. Senior guard Kathryn Williams is currently SVSU's leading scorer (16.5 ppg). The Cardinals have lost three of their last four games to date.

Scouting Lake Superior State - Saturday's contest marks the 61st series meeting against Lake Superior State with the Lakers holding a 34-26 series advantage. FSU has won the past four series contests and defeated the Lakers 88-68 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last meeting (Feb. 8, 2001). Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 4-2 versus LSSU. The Lakers are 12-2 overall and 7-2 in GLIAC action heading into this Thursday's (Jan. 24) contest at Grand Valley State. Lake Superior State is coached by fourth-year head coach Kris Bullock. Junior forward Alice Duesing, the older sister of FSU freshman forward Sarah Duesing (Sault Ste. Marie/Sault Area), is presently LSSU's scoring leader (21.5 ppg) this season. Lake Superior State has won four consecutive games to date this campaign.

Up Next - Ferris State will battle the Michigan Tech University Huskies next Thursday (Jan. 31) at 5:30 p.m. (EST) in MTU's Student Development Center Gymnasium at Houghton, Mich. FSU will then square off against the Northern Michigan University Wildcats next Sunday (Feb. 3) in a 1 p.m. (EST) game at NMU's Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich. Both are GLIAC contests.
