Jan. 15: FSU Falls To 8-5 Overall

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will face the Northwood University Timberwolves this Thursday (Jan. 17) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at NU's Bennett Sports Center in Midland, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. (EST). FSU will then host the Grand Valley State University Lakers this Saturday (Jan. 19) at 1 p.m. (EST) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Media Coverage - Saturday's game against Grand Valley State will be carried live by radio station WMFN-AM (640) in Grand Rapids, Mich. Rick Berkey (play-by-play) and Kent Fisher (color commentary) will handle the broadcast. The broadcast can also be accessed through the Grand Valley State University Athletics Website at this address: http://lakersports.gvsu.edu.

Last Week - Ferris State dropped a 71-66 decision versus the Ashland University Eagles last Saturday (Jan. 12) at Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs are currently 8-5 overall and 4-2 in conference action. FSU ranks 64th of 1,309 institutions (all levels) represented in the latest (Jan. 7) Dunkel Sports Research Index Women's Basketball Ratings. The Bulldogs are seventh in the latest (Jan. 8) NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional rankings. FSU has presently won four of its past six games.

Killips Leads The Way - Senior guard Debbie Killips tallied 17 points and seven steals to lead FSU against Ashland. A second-team 2000-01 GLIAC North Division pick, Killips is presently FSU's season scoring leader (15.3 points per game) and the school's career steals leader (281 steals).

Killips currently has 362 career assists and is two assists away from Monta Ware (364; 1979-83), who ranks fourth on the all-time FSU chart. She has scored 839 career points to date and currently ranks 13th on FSU's career scoring chart. Killips has nine double-figure scoring games this season. DeMartin Has Streak End - Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin had her five-game double-figure scoring streak end as she registered eight points against the Eagles. DeMartin currently ranks second (.816; 102-125) on FSU's career free throw percentage chart and is presently Ferris' third-leading season scorer (14.0 ppg). During the 2000-01 campaign, the 5-9 DeMartin was FSU's third-leading scorer with 261 points in 27 contests (9.7 ppg).

Brogger Closing In On Mark - Junior forward Jennifer Brogger currently has 195 career rebounds and is five shy of registering her 200th career rebound. She has made 71 career three-point field goals to date and ranks sixth on the all-time FSU list. The 5-9 Brogger has registered nine double-figure scoring outings this season and presently ranks as FSU's fourth-leading scorer (12.7 ppg). Brogger currently ranks eighth on FSU's career three-point field goal percentage chart (.341; 71-208). She has reached double-digits (scoring) in five of the last six games this campaign.

Horwitz Keeps Streak Alive - Sophomore center Bridget Horwitz added 15 points versus Ashland and currently has an active nine-game double-figure scoring streak. Horwitz has tallied 10 points or more in 12 of 13 games this campaign. She presently has 32 career blocks and needs five more to tie Danielle Smith (37; 1988-91) for sixth place on the all-time FSU chart. She has 197 career rebounds to date and needs three more to notch her 200th career rebound. Horwitz is FSU's rebounding leader (8.5 rebounds per game) this season.

Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 64-33 (.660) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1999-2000 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

Bulldog Bites - Sophomore forward Stephanie Benear had a career-high five assists and notched her 100th career point versus Ashland ........... FSU's top four season scoring leaders (Debbie Killips, Lucy DeMartin, Bridget Horwitz and Jennifer Brogger) have accounted for 737 of the squad's 955 total points (77%) this season .............. Killips has been FSU's assists leader seven of the last eight games this season ........ The loss to Ashland was FSU head coach Tracey Fisk's first (3-1) against the Eagles ........ Sophomore guard Michelle Welch currently has 70 career points and is 30 points shy of notching her 100th career point ............ Killips has made 81 career three-point field goals to date and needs seven more to tie Jen Newsone (88; 1998-00) for fifth place on the all-time FSU list ........ Killips presently ranks 10th in career field goal percentage (.461; 304-659), fourth in career three-point field goal percentage (.368; 81-220) and seventh in career free throw percentage (.789; 150-190) at Ferris State ......... Brogger ranks third (.814; 92-113) in Ferris' career free throw percentage list ....... Horwitz is presently fifth (.502; 163-325) on the school's career field goal percentage chart. Her current season field goal percentage (.544; 86-158) and blocked shots (15) totals presently rank 10th on FSU's single-season lists.

Against Northwood - FSU and Northwood will square off for the 42nd time this Thursday at NU's Bennett Sports Center. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 29-12 and have won 11 consecutive series meetings. In the last meeting (Feb. 10, 2001), FSU posted a 73-60 road victory. Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current 6-0 career coaching mark versus Northwood. The Timberwolves are 5-9 overall and 1-6 in GLIAC action heading into this Thursday's contest. Northwood is coached by Kelli Parker, who's in her second season at the helm. Sophomore center Leah Douglas is currently NU's season scoring leader (13.4 ppg). Northwood has lost three-straight season contests to date.

Scouting Grand Valley State - Saturday's contest marks the 58th series meeting against Grand Valley State with the Lakers holding a 41-16 series advantage. However, FSU has won four of the last six contests and defeated the Lakers 76-68 at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in the last meeting (Feb. 12, 2001). Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 4-3 versus GVSU. The Lakers are 8-7 overall and 2-5 in GLIAC action heading into this Saturday's contest. Grand Valley State is coached by seventh-year head coach Claudette Charney. Junior guard Laurie Rehmann is presently GVSU's scoring leader (14.3 ppg) this season. Grand Valley State has won three of its last five games to date this campaign.
