Feb. 25: GLIAC Tournament Up Next For Ferris State

FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will face the Hillsdale College Chargers in the quarterfinal round of the 12th annual Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament this Thursday (Feb. 28) at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. (EST). The winner will advance to this Friday's (March 1) 8 p.m. (EST) semifinal versus the winner of Thursday's quarterfinal-round game between the Northern Michigan University Wildcats and the Ashland University Eagles.

Last Week - Ferris State dropped a 72-69 league decision to Northern Michigan last Thursday (Feb. 21) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. FSU then lost a 70-65 conference home contest against the Michigan Tech University Huskies last Saturday (Feb. 23). Ferris is currently 14-11 overall and 10-8 (4th place-North Division) in league play. The Bulldogs rank 109th of 1,308 institutions (all levels) represented in the latest (Feb. 18) Dunkel Sports Research Index Women's Basketball Ratings. Ferris, which presently has won three of its last five games, has qualified for the conference tournament three consecutive seasons to date.

Horwitz On Top Of Her Game - Sophomore center Bridget Horwitz notched her eighth double-double (points and rebounds) performance this campaign with 16 points and 12 rebounds versus Michigan Tech. The 6-2 Horwitz has currently scored 10 points or more in seven consecutive outings. She presently has 55 career blocked shots and ranks third on the all-time FSU list. Her current 38 blocks this year is listed second on Ferris' single-season chart. Horwitz is currently eighth (.471; 238-505) among the school's career field goal percentage leaders. She has registered 222 rebounds this campaign and needs six more to tie Karen Kramer (228; 1984-85) for ninth place on FSU's single-season list. Horwitz grabbed her 300th career rebound versus Michigan Tech and has compiled 308 career boards to date. She has made 161 field goals this campaign and is five shy of tying Vicki Williams (166; 1981-82) for sixth place on Ferris' single-season chart.

Brogger Scores 600th Point - Junior forward Jennifer Brogger has attained double-figure scoring in 14 of her last 20 games to date and has 16 double-digit scoring performances this campaign. She currently has made 88 career three-point field goals and ranks sixth on FSU's all-time list. The 5-9 Brogger garnered her 600th career point versus Northern Michigan and has totaled 615 career points to date. She currently ranks first (.842; 123-146) on FSU's career free throw percentage chart. Her current season free throw percentage (.887; 63-71) is Ferris' second-best single-season mark.

DeMartin Among School's Leaders - Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin currently ranks second (.835; 152-182) on FSU's career free throw percentage chart and is presently Ferris' third-leading scorer (14.0 ppg) this campaign. She has registered 19 double-figure scoring outings this season, including six of the last seven contests to date. Her current season free throw percentage (.851; 86-101) is listed fifth on the school's single-season list. DeMartin needs one made free throw to tie Karen Kramer (87; 1986-87) for 10th place on Ferris' single-season chart. She recorded her 600th career point against Michigan Tech and has scored 612 career points to date.

Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 70-39 (.642) in four seasons at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1999-2000 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).

Bulldog Bites - Junior forward Ann Platz tallied a career-high four blocked shots versus Northern Michigan. She currently has scored 84 career points and is 16 points shy of notching her 100th career point .......... Senior guard Debbie Killips presently has 126 assists this campaign and is two away from tying Monta Ware (128; 1982-83) for seventh place on Ferris' all-time list. Her current 88 steals this season presently ranks third on FSU's single-season chart .............. Sophomore guard Michelle Welch has scored 89 career points and is 11 points shy of attaining her 100th career point .......... Killips has made 48 three-point field goals this season and is five shy of matching Valerie Scott (53; 1995-96) for fifth place on Ferris' single-season list. She has registered 106 career three-point field goals to date and needs 29 more to tie Jodi Raab (135; 1989-93) for second place on the school's all-time chart ........... Ferris head coach Tracey Fisk needs two more wins to tie Lori Hyman (72-86; 1989-95) for second place on the school's career coaching victory list ............ Killips has registered 1,025 career points and is 73 points away from tying Julie Anthony (1,098; 1994-98) for eighth place on the school's career scoring list. She has appeared in 109 contests to date and is tied with Carrie Roys (1996-00) for first place in total games played ............ FSU has a combined 3-3 mark in three previous GLIAC Tournament appearances. Ferris dropped a 90-83 decision versus Northern Michigan in the tournament championship game two years ago (March 4, 2000) ......... Killips earned first-team Verizon Academic All-District IV College Division Women's Basketball recognition last Thursday (Feb. 21) and Lucy DeMartin was a second-team pick. Killips was the district's top vote getter and advances to the national ballot .......... Jennifer Brogger presently has grabbed 246 career rebounds and needs four more to attain her 250th career board ........... FSU's top four season scoring leaders (Killips, Bridget Horwitz, Brogger, and DeMartin) have accounted for 79% (1,421-1,793) of the squad's points this season ............ Killips has scored 385 points to date this campaign and is 14 points away from tying Jodi Raab (399; 1992-93) and Danielle Smith (399; 1988-89) for ninth place on Ferris' single-season list.

Killips Moving Up - A second-team 2000-01 GLIAC North Division pick, Debbie Killips is presently FSU's leading scorer (15.4 ppg) this campaign and the school's career steals leader (318). The 5-7 Killips currently ranks third on Ferris' career assists list (426) and needs 65 more to tie second-place holder Jodi Raab (491; 1989-93). She has registered 374 career field goals to date and is one shy of tying Sandy Davison (375; 1983-86) for eighth place on the school's all-time chart. Killips presently ranks 10th in career field goal percentage (.452; 374-827), fifth in career three-point field goal percentage (.364; 106-291) and seventh in career free throw percentage (.788; 171-217). She ranks 10th in steals (3.5 spg) in the latest (Feb. 18) NCAA Division II national statistics.

Scouting Hillsdale - FSU and Hillsdale will square off for the 44th time this Thursday. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 29-14 and have won three of the past five contests. In the last series' meeting (Jan. 3, 2002), Ferris posted an 82-67 road win. Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current 3-2 career coaching mark versus Hillsdale. The Chargers are 19-7 overall and 11-6 in GLIAC action heading into this Thursday's contest. Hillsdale is coached by former Ferris State head women's basketball coach Dana Munk (1995-98), who's in her fourth season at the helm. Junior guard Stephanie Heid is currently the leading scorer (18.2 ppg) this season for the Chargers, who have won seven of their last eight games to date this campaign. Hillsdale posted an 85-78 double overtime win versus FSU in last year's (Feb. 28, 2001) GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal round at the DeltaPlex. Heid led the Chargers with a game-high 27 points.
