Feb. 13: Bulldogs Improve To 13-9 Overall
FSU Basketball At A Glance - The Ferris State University women's basketball team will battle the Saginaw Valley State University Cardinals this Saturday (Feb. 16) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at SVSU's O'Neill Arena in University Center, Mich. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. (EST).
A Look Back - Ferris State defeated the Grand Valley State University Lakers 70-64 this past Monday (Feb. 11) in league action at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich. Ferris beat the Northwood University Timberwolves 68-63 in a conference contest last Saturday (Feb. 9) at FSU's Jim Wink Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The Bulldogs dropped an 81-66 GLIAC decision to the Lake Superior State University Lakers last Thursday (Feb. 7) in LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium at Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Ferris is currently 13-9 overall and 9-6 (3rd place-North Division) in league play. The Bulldogs rank 192nd of 1,308 institutions (all levels) represented in the latest (Feb. 11) Dunkel Sports Research Index Women's Basketball Ratings. FSU is 10th overall in the current (Feb. 6) NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional rankings.
DeMartin Posts Career Performance - Sophomore guard Lucy DeMartin tallied a career-high 30 points at Grand Valley State. The 5-9 DeMartin currently ranks first (.842; 144-171) on FSU's career free throw percentage chart and is presently Ferris' third-leading scorer (13.8 ppg) this campaign. She has registered 16 double-figure scoring outings this season, including three of the last four contests to date. DeMartin presently ranks 30th nationally in free throw percentage (.867; 78-90) in the latest (Feb. 4) NCAA Division II statistics. Her current season free throw percentage is listed second on the school's single-season chart. DeMartin needs nine made free throws to tie Karen Kramer (87; 1986-87) for 10th place on Ferris' single-season list.
Brogger Nets Game Scoring Honor - Junior forward Jennifer Brogger scored a game-high 21 points versus Northwood. Brogger has attained double-figure scoring in 13 of the last 17 games to date and has 15 double-digit scoring performances this campaign. She currently has made 84 career three-point field goals and ranks seventh on the all-time FSU list. The 5-7 Brogger has 91 career assists and is nine shy of notching her 100th career assist. She currently ranks second in career free throw percentage (.841; 116-138) and is ninth in career three-point field goal percentage (.329; 84-255). Brogger has registered 590 career points to date and needs 10 more to garner her 600th career point. She has presently grabbed 238 career rebounds and is 12 shy of recording her 250th career board.
Horwitz Records Double Effort - Sophomore center Bridget Horwitz her seventh double-double (points and rebounds) performance this campaign against Northwood as she totaled 15 points with 15 rebounds. Horwitz presently has 49 career blocked shots and ranks third on the all-time FSU list. Her current 32 blocks this year presently ranks second on Ferris' single-season chart. Horwitz is currently eighth (.470; 216-460) on the school's career field goal percentage chart. She ranks as FSU's leading rebounder (8.9 rpg) and second-leading scorer (14.7 ppg) to date this season.
Head Coach Tracey Fisk - Tracey Fisk has a current career coaching record of 69-37 (.651) in her fourth season at Ferris State. A 1996 graduate of Western Michigan, Fisk guided Ferris State to a 22-7 mark and the school's first NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional appearance during the 1999-2000 campaign. Prior to FSU, Fisk spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lake Michigan College (1994-97) and one season at the University of Indianapolis (1997-98).
Bulldog Bites - Senior guard Debbie Killips presently has 76 steals this campaign and needs nine more to tie Valerie Scott (85; 1996-97) for fourth place on FSU's single-season chart ......... Ferris' top four season-scoring leaders (Killips, Bridget Horwitz, Lucy DeMartin and Jennifer Brogger) have accounted for 79% (1,254-1,584) of the squad's total points this campaign ........... Sophomore guard Michelle Welch currently has scored 83 career points and is 17 points shy of notching her 100th career point .......... Killips has made 100 career three-point field goals to date and needs 35 more to tie Jodi Raab (135; 1989-93) for second place on the school's all-time list ........... Horwitz has posted four consecutive double-figure scoring outings to date and is averaging 16.5 ppg in that span ........ Sophomore forward Stephanie Benear presently has tallied 131 career points and is 19 points away from registering her 150th career point ........ Ferris head coach Tracey Fisk needs three more wins to tie Lori Hyman (72-86; 1989-95) for second place on the school's career coaching victory chart ....... The win at Grand Valley State was FSU's sixth (6-23) series victory in Allendale, Mich. ......... Ferris State ranks fifth nationally in team free throw percentage (76%; 309-407) in the latest (Feb. 4) NCAA Division II statistics ........... Killips has been FSU's assists leader 14 of the last 17 contests to date this season.
Killips Ranks Among Leaders - Senior guard Debbie Killips is presently FSU's leading scorer (15.5 ppg) and the school's career steals leader (306). A second-team 2000-01 GLIAC North Division pick, Killips currently has scored 981 career points and needs 19 more to register her 1,000th career point. The 5-7 Killips presently ranks third on Ferris' career assists list (410) and needs 81 more to tie second-place holder Jodi Raab (491; 1989-93). Killips has registered 358 career field goals to date and is seven shy of tying Raab (365; 1989-93) for ninth place on the school's all-time chart. She presently ranks 10th in career field goal percentage (.452; 358-792), fifth in career three-point field goal percentage (.364; 100-275) and seventh in career free throw percentage (.786; 165-210) at Ferris State.
Scouting Saginaw Valley State - FSU and Saginaw Valley State will square off for the 56th time this Saturday at SVSU's O'Neill Arena. The Cardinals lead the all-time series 38-17. However, FSU has won the last six series' contests, including the last meeting (Jan. 24, 2002) when Ferris posted a 75-65 home victory. Ferris State head coach Tracey Fisk has a current 6-1 career coaching mark versus Saginaw Valley State. The Cardinals are 8-14 overall and 2-12 in GLIAC action heading into this Thursday's (Feb. 14) league home game against Grand Valley State. SVSU is coached by Kim Chandler, who's in her first season at the helm. Senior guard Kathryn Williams is currently the leading scorer (14.9 ppg) this season for the Cardinals, who have lost eight straight games to date this campaign.
